The Joker Arrested in Michigan

Why Costumed Villains Are Rarely Successful Outside of Movies and Comics

As a comic book fan, I will admit it: we comic book fans can be really weird people sometimes.

Picture this incident in Three Rivers, Michigan. After the critical and financial success of The Dark Knight, the most recent movie of the Batman franchise, theatrical posters and other Dark Knight related memorabilia are in high demand. As though ripped out of the pages of a Batman comic book, an overzealous Batman fan (or perhaps some punk attempting to make a quick buck with a quick heist) charges into a theater and attempts to rip off the theatrical posters of the Dark Knight. For a crime, that's not too extraordinary.

What makes this attempted heist odd is that the wannabe thief was wearing a purple suit, green wig, and white face makeup resembling a wannabe Joker.

As a cosplayer (a person who dresses in costume) during the convention scene, I find myself shaking my head in disbelief. When did the comic book and cosplaying hobby take such an odd turn? The thief had to be a comic book or movie fan. If he were just attempting a crime of opportunity, he'd have worn regular clothes that blended well with the other people. This would definitely help his chances of successfully stealing the goods.

Perhaps he wanted to execute his heist in a stylized manner akin to his favorite villain. Most cosplayers act like their characters as part of the costume. But if he really wanted to emulate The Joker, instead of attempting to steal from the theater, he would be attempting to blow up the theater to create chaos and anarchy. Research your characters, boy. The next time he wants to attempt a heist as a Batman villain, perhaps he should consider a Catwoman costume. He'd get plenty of attention and the heist would be more a more accurate crime for the character since Catwoman is a cat burglar.

  • An attempt at life imitating art.
  • Wannabe thief dressed as The Joker arrested.
As comic books become more mainstream entertainment, the temptation to profit from it occasionally yields strange results like this.
