The Jonas Brothers Deserve a Chance

Looking Past the Genre to the Band's Actual Talent

Eric Harty
The Jonas Brothers have sold over three million albums and have charted number one on the Billboard 200. For most bands, numbers like this would result in the band being viewed as incredibly successful and doing pretty well for themselves. However the Jonas Brothers can not view themselves in this position, as they have very few fans who have graduated from high school.

The problem that surrounds the Jonas Brothers is the outside perspective of them, and the way that are viewed as nothing but pre-teen pop. Of course there is a shade of truth to that view.

The Jonas Brothers are signed to Disney and have relied upon that association for most of their success. The early success of the band was a direct outgrowth from Disney's obnoxious yet popular Hannah Montana series. After appearing on the show the Jonas Brothers than had one of their first major tours opening for Hannah Montana (and also for Miley Cyrus as well).

After that the Jonas Brothers still didn't leave the Disney Channel promotional machine making the made for tv movie Camp Rock, and continuing to have frequent appearances on the channel. While this made good business sense for the band, it also pigeon holed them into being nothing more than a little kid pop band.

Yet listening to the band play, and especially doing so without any preconceived ideas allows the talent of the Jonas Brothers to shine. Fundamentally the band is actually really good. Unlike most bands of their type, they actually write their own songs, which is indicative of them having some real talent. Song writing wise the music is good even if the lyrics are often a bit flat and lame.

Still the band doesn't take themselves too seriously, and know what they are doing and what they want to do. In the future they will likely improve their song writing and performance capabilities.

The Jonas Brothers' albums are worth a listen even if not good from start to finish. It just requires that you first get past any preconceived notions regarding the band. The one thing that would never be a good idea is going to one of the Jonas Brothers' concerts, as good as the band may be, there is no reason to want to have anything to do with the immaturity of their fans.
