The Journey Ends for American Idol's Siobhan Magnus

The journey ended for yet another contestant on this season's American Idol on last Wednesday's results show. Siobhan Magnus received the fewest votes out of the whopping 33 million that were called in after the performances on Tuesday night.

The cute, quirky 19-year-old glass blower from Cape Cod, Mass., performed last week's mentor Shania Twain's first number one hit entitled "Any Man of Mine." During their meeting, Twain told Siobhan that she intended for the song to be full of "attitude" when she wrote it. Therefore, she encouraged her to put plenty of attitude into her performance.

After the crowd cheered for Siobhan, Judge Randy Jackson complimented her outfit and her trademark high notes and told her he had loved it all. Ellen DeGeneres then went on to say that it was a "good way to end the show" and said that it was "fantastic." Kara DioGuardi then enthusiastically proclaimed "look who's back......Siobhan" implying that she had made a big improvement from the last few weeks in the competition. Then the almost always critical Simon Cowell added his opinions. He remarked that although the song was perfect and he really likes it, that a few of her notes could be considered screaming. Furthermore, he said that it almost sounded like she was "giving birth up there." He summed up his critique by saying that despite the "screaming" that Siobhan's performance was both "fun" and "good."

Although I hated to see Siobhan go because I really admire how she does not care to be like everyone else in order to fit in but "walks to the beat of her own drummer," I would have to agree with Simon as I have seldom done. I also felt as if her rendition of the song started out weak, and it initially had me wondering if she had changed the song a little too much. Although I was impressed midway through the song by her wide vocal range and her ability to hit the high notes, which has made her stand out amongst contestants this season, I would have to agree that the last note was more screaming than it was singing. I feel as though if she had not held the note so long, it would have overall been a much better performance. And she may not have been the one sent home last week.

She certainly got the crowd going as she danced around the stage during her song, but obviously the majority of the votes that were called in went to the five remaining contestants. Hopefully there will be someone out there in the music industry who will appreciate her uniqueness, positivity, and energy that she puts in her music and will help her to advance her singing career because she certainly has a lot to offer. Good luck to Siobhan in the future!

A whopping 33 million votes on American Idol is the equivalent of 26 teenagers texting their face off. The American Idol voting system is wrong and wrought with mistakes. It is not a singing talent show. Instead it is some sort of quasi sub par wannabee show. I recommend that people stop watching this trash.
