One of life's little treats is, unexpectedly, discovering something wonderful...and one evening, while driving through White Lake, New York, I did.

It was about 8pm, hubby and I were hungry and he'd heard about a new restaurant from a friend. We decided to poke our noses into Luzon Station Eatery and Saloon...and surprise of surprises there was life. It was brimming with activity, something you usually don't find that time of night in Sullivan County. The bar area was packed with people eating and drinking, the Luzon Station Trio was playing; There was laughter, joy and the echoes of life. It was truly unlike any other place I've encountered north of Rockland County.

Luzon Station, on Kauneonga Lake, just opened the end of May. The proprietors are Jonathan and Patti Greco Sunshine, who previously owned Luzon Station in Hurleyville. Though, highly successful, they were forced to close on Halloween 2004, when their lease was not renewed by the landlord. Jonathan, the chef and restaurateur, was formerly Convention Manager at Grossingers, Browns and Stevensville Resorts, all highly successful when the Catskill's were HOT. Patti, a jazz vocalist, calls herself "the singer and front girl". Having traveled the world as a professional singer, she's happy to have a permanent gig, "I work cheap and I like to think the caliber of entertainment we bring to Luzon Station is a cut above".

Everything, at Luzon, is "a cut above"; Welcoming atmosphere, wonderful lakeside frontage and exceptional food, starting with a warm loaf of bread. There are burgers, steaks, chicken, fish, pasta and vegetarian selections. All served with a unique "Luzon" twist. The Asian style Salmon was delish and my husband's Shrimp & Scallops with Pancetta was fabulous. We shared the melt in your mouth cheesecake. People around us ordered other dishes and all looked very happy. The service is friendly and everyone helps out; Cody the busboy was a delight. The drinks are filled to the brim, in glasses oversized to begin with.

"Jonathan and I are all about hospitality. Together we wanted to create an atmosphere that was comfortable, not frou frou, where prices were affordable. We're very big on local clientele. We love the summer people but it's not our driving force because we'll be open year round. We're a community restaurant. We like to cater to the locals. We know how hard people work and are very thankful when they come in. We want them to get a good value."

Luzon Station is open for dinner Wednesday thru Sunday, doors open at 3pm. Friday's, at 10:30pm, they have a Karaoke/dance party catering to an "over 30" crowd, spinning lively music from the 70's, 80's & 90's. And mark your calendar, the Halloween costume party is sure to be fab-u-lous!

In this day and age, when you leave a place feeling better than you did going in, it's a find. Luzon Station is such a place, you'll find them at 3 Horseshoe Lake Road, Kauneonga Lake, New York 845-583-4200

To the person that was not big enough to leave his or her name on the last comment.

Dear current or future AA Member,
We go out of our way to serve the locals year round. The fact that we are busy this time of year proves that. It sounds as if the writer has a drinking problem. We will extend our help to you in finding a program to deal with your problem. Most mature, responsible adults do not go to bars to get DRUNK, they go to socialize and have a good time. Apparently you go to get drunk, and yes we will not serve you if you come in drunk, and we will cut you off if we feel you have reached your limit. Bartenders are obligated and responsible by law to cut off those who we feel have had to much to drink. We suggest that you go to another tavern where the drinks are less expensive and where no one cares if you get drunk leave and kill yourself or much worse, kill someone else.
