There are those who hate writing. They hate writing the essay question on a history test, filling out a application for a job, and just putting anything down in words. Many prefer talking or just reading. For the writer, it usually is the opposite. We may not enjoy the essay question on that history test, but we can find things just by putting a few words together.
In all my writing I have no definitive joy. Some things I know I have to write, and I hate that. The things with pressure on them are rarely a joy, but working through them can lead to it.
The joy of writing can be found in the basic short story. We write it out, try to define and change a character, and see something there that interests us. We could want to turn that short story into a novel, or feel such a joy that we pursue writing even more-whether it be short stories, novellas, or novels.
The joy is exploring. We work out things in our mind, but, when we put them on paper, they change. Perhaps we wanted to write about a family member, and then find ourselves changing their aspects on the page.
If we write non-fiction often the research can be interesting. We may think it will be boring, but, in my experience, it is not. This is exploring too. And It can lead into a creative outlet.
Some of us can write both fiction and non-fiction. We find a joy in it, even if the pay is bad initially. By playing with many fields we can come to conclusions: Can this be a career? Can we continue writing all our lives?
The possibilities are endless in any form. We can tell our stories or other peoples. We can write one sentence and call it a day. Or we work for hours typing out a novel or history book.
The joy can be hindered by the publishing game. But, there is no more joy in writing than being told what you have written is not only good but publishable.
We can play upon the joys of writing all we want. It is a process to be savored at all points of life.

Post a CommentI also really enjoy researching non-fiction. It's a lot of fun to learn about subjects I have little knowledge of. Nice article.
