The Key to Succeeding in Direct Sales

Finding Your Why

Shawna Straub
It seems like such a simple concept. If you want to succeed in any business venture "Finding Your Why" is the most important key to being successful. Having been in Direct Sales personally for the last 15 years I realize that I have morphed into different stages in my career directly affected by where my head was in the game and what my motivation was for winning.

Why do you think companies have contests once or twice a year? It helps to give people a temporary "why" to shoot for and helps them do things they never thought possible in order to win. The only problem with this is that if you don't win a contest or continue winning it's easy to get discouraged. The best thing to do when trying to be successful in direct sales is define your why for joining the company and continually remind yourself via visual reminders, tapes/cd's, or other ways you can consistently imagine your "why."

For me my "why" was defined when I became a divorced mother of one. I realize that it was truly important to have a career that would allow me the flexibility I needed with my family schedule and the money that would allow us to have the freedom I needed without "having to have a husband." I wanted to be able to take care of myself and my family and direct sales gave me an avenue to pursue to realize that dream.

For some people their "why" can be helping others to succeed, sharing a product or service with others they are passionate about, or financial freedom. You must constantly visualize where you want to be and remind yourself with every challenging customer, dark house, or rejection you face that your "why" is big enough to see you through the hard times.

If you aren't sure what your "why" is than it will be next to impossible to stay focused during the ups and downs of direct sales. Take the time today to write down the reasons "why" you joined the company you did and put those reasons in plain sight where you can refer to them daily to help you succeed.
