The Kind Life by Alicia Silverstone Promises Life Changing Health Through Vegan Diet, but Does it Deliver?
After discussing the book on Oprah, it has become a New York Times bestseller. It's the kind of book that you want to be on shows like Oprah just so that people will actually buy the book and open the first couple pages. A book about veganism, and eating just clean whole grains might not appeal to people otherwise, but after getting through the first few pages most people will be glad they made the purchase.
Although The Kind Diet takes the reader through, what on the surface, appears to be a very strict vegan diet, the book is well served for vegetarians and carnivores alike. The book takes a very non-judgmental approach and does not give the reader any all or nothing ultimatums as some vegetarian/vegan/animals rights groups often do, scaring away their audience. The Kind Diet is not that. It is in fact what the title claims to be - a kind diet; One that nurtures the individual and is a far cry from a diet of deprivation or starvation. It is a way of eating and being kind to one's body and soul, appreciating the food we eat and where it comes from.
Throughout the book, Alicia walks the reader through small steps we can make and the great impact those steps could have on our health. She gives facts instead of rhetoric, not leaving much room for dispute or to feel as if the author's bias is trying to reprogram us. For some readers who decide that adding just a few menu items in place of something less healthy, she calls them flirts, and encourages people to flirt with this idea in a non-committal sort of way.
Alicia also introduces new items and gives the reader opportunity to try items from other regions that we may not normally eat. Upon reading this book, I discovered, as many do, that I eat in a total food rut. In my family, meals basically rotate in and out on a week long schedule, with a surprise every once in a while, but basically the same entrees. After reading this book I realized just how much I was missing out on, and that is key to the success of this book. The Kind Diet is non-deprivational. It is not about weight loss, although that is a terrific side effect to following it, but about health and living the best life possible.
