The Knight and His Serf

_I03I_
Every day was the same thing, work, work, work. Being a peasant was tough when just in the same land your lord lived a beautiful life, never being hungry, being able to marry, always leaving the estate when ever he pleased for one. Being a peasant you would rarely see us go farther than 25 miles away from the estate. While we work the lord would leave to any other kingdom, to any other country, oh I did envy my lord. Well at least I knew he loved us, the lord swore that he would protect us, his serfs from attack or intruders, as long as he was the lord. And was quite nice if you consider that we have no relation of any kind, neither blood or friendship.

I hoed away at the weeds digging up the rich soil to plant the yearly crops. The sun was hot on my back, but i would say it was a lovely day, the every so often breeze cooled me down and made me think of freedom and leaving the land one day. I rested for a minute to relieve my back from the pain of bending over all day. I drank out of my canister and noticed the knights far in the distance in their tournament ring. They were lancing, and sword fighting, and wrestling. I guess their training for that one day the leave out to battle were their lives have been devoted to. I starred to the distance and noticed Sir Francis Galloping across the outside land. He was a true gentleman.

Sometimes I spent my day thinking of Sir Francis. He was a very brave, courageous, and loyal knight, he was an amazing man spent his time saving people in distress, and not to mention he had beautiful locks of hair. You could watch it sway back and forth while he galloped on his horse.

Once he saved me from a evil journeyman, well it was really my fault, I had ran away from the estate to feel what it was like to be free, away from the land, away from the crops. And it certainly did feel good, until I came across a huge evil journeyman. He tried to rape me, until Sir Francis came galloping on his horse and saved me and slayn the evil journeyman. I looked into his eyes and he looked in mine, at that moment it felt better than freedom. We made a promise that if I didn't tell he slayn the journeyman, then he wouldn't tell that I tried to run away. Which was a generous offer because, If I never ran away he would have never killed the journeyman.

The day was done and it was off to bed to start another day of work, it was the same routine every time, and honestly you couldn't say you hated it cause it becomes a part of your every day life. Its a part of you, and I cant say I hate myself.

The morning was the same as usual we would start with our breakfast of bread, meat, and a glass of wine, we serfs all ate together, often finding our selves in little conversations that would be forgotten when the day was done. And some of it was some of the most important new to know.

"The lord says we better come in early" a man yells across the dining table, we rarely finished work early, usually we would only do it when the harvest was doing well, and lets just say this wasn't one of those years. We all quietly mumbled to our neighbors in curiosity of what was going on. "perhaps we should as the old wise man under the cellar". This old man new everything there was to know he was our right hand in everything we did, from the time of harvest, to what he called mathematics, its all wisdom he has accumulated in his life. After all he is the oldest one off all of us.

I walk over to the wise old man, and sat by him, he looked at me and gently passed his hand across my face. he looked me in the eyes and told " Shall you return the favor and you will be as happy as the lord". I had no idea what he meant but when i prepared to ask him he got up and went down to his cellar, were i was certain nit to follow him, nobody but him has gone down to that cellar and as long as I live i was sure I wasn't going to go in myself.

It was about noon when we had set in to go home, I wasn't as tired as usual it was nearly half the days work and not only that but it was cloudy and windy. By far the most relaxing day Ive had in years.

Until a flaming arrow came firing down just beside me crashing into the ground, I looked up. Hundreds of flaming arrows came flying down and the entire estate went in panic. People were running around and screaming "we're under attack, we're under attack. I had no where to hide, all the serf bunks were locked down and everybody was hiding and running, I looked up to top of the high estate wall, and noticed some men firing, it was our very own knights, doing what they could. Firing their bows to keep what they could away from swarming the estate. Many serfs began to help and throw rocks and hot oil into the heap of men getting closer to the castle exterior.

I ran to go up the castle wall to see what was up on the other side and over heard a few of our knights " we're going to have to raise the bloody gate and shut it as fast as possible to get out" I continue running and paid little attention to what they were yelling about, instead I continued up to the top and looked over the wall. There was a huge crowed men some shooting arrows and some creeping there way up to the estate walls I looked from end to end. Each one of those men had an empty look in their eyes. As if they didn't want to be out there fighting. Perhaps even being at home working in the crops and coming back to their families.

As I looked a felt time slow down and noticed an arrow> it was coming my direction, I paniced and dove behind the wall. Only to turn around and look that it had shot a bowman dead in the head and I assumed killed him instantly.

I sat there for a long period of time and cried, cause I had never seen a man die before, much less an entire battle were there were many men dying. But I didn't dare look until the battle settled and the swords didn't cl adder as much. I peeked up and seen mens bodies laying all over, and a few couple hundred men fighting with swords. When I seen Sir Francis was out there, he was at least still alive and still fighting, it seemed to me like he was fighting three men at once. Surprisingly never being out numbered, I guess all those tournaments payed off. I watched him fight for minutes going on stabbing men to their deaths.

Then at one point a man stared him down from behind. I'm assuming he was a intruder cause he had a blind rage, a rage of attack. He was on his way to kill Sir Francis. But I was sure he would see him.
I couldn't watch I got back behind the wall and tucked my head between my knees I hoped that Sir Francis would see the man.

I looked up, the man was approaching Sir Francis, I tried yelling to him, but I was certain he could not here me.

It was over, the man I thought I would love was gonna die. I looked down to my feet and felt a harsh feeling come over me, and I seen it. The Bow was right at my feet, I picked it up along with a arrow beside it. I had never shot one of this before, but If I were to save Sir Francis, this was my only chance.

I turned around, pulled back and aimed at the man, he approached just steps away from Sir Francis and rose his sword. I wasn't ready for this, but I closed my eyes and let go of the bow. I couldn't open my eyes. I had already felt that Sir Francis was dead.

I took my chance.

I opened my eyes and saw down on the ground Sir Francis stared right back into my eyes. And at his feet was the same man with an arrow on his back.
I had save Sir Francis.

Immediately Sir Francis ran inside the gate, and I ran down to the ground. We met by a blacksmiths anvil and he hugged me were I could hardly breathe, but I dint mind, it was good enough I had never had intercourse with him, besides the night he saved me.

"My lady, you saved my life, and now I owe it to you" he looked in to my eyes, and I looked back into his, at that moment, I knew this was better than freedom.
