The Landmark Inn of Marquette, Michigan
Where Old World Charm and Contemporary Convenience Collide in Marquette Michigan
The Landmark Inn offers 62 rooms, all which are adorned with a European styled elegance of a period gone-by, but each with its own unique "Old World" charm, peppered with modern day convenience. The vast majority of the rooms feature fireplaces for cozy romantic evenings while soaking in the Jacuzzi. Add the many vista's almost each room gifts you and yours, you are in for a well deserved, long awaited weekend away.
Landmark Inn and their splendid rooms will not be left alone as their sole vestige of elegance that is pleasing to one's eye but also to a guests palette featuring cuisine by Caper's Executive Chef, Ryan Potila who creates classic dishes along with fare with a "New Age" spin that he could only conjure-up. The Capers Restaurant is open seven days a week serving breakfast and dinner where the guests are always welcomed in attire from sport coats and little black dresses to the latest outdoor wear of L.L. Bean. Do not let the elegance be bestowed on you or intimidate; this is, after all, the Upper Peninsula Of Michigan.
If you're feeling just peckish or feel a deep down hunger, the Northland Pub can cater to those who have larger appetites, yet in a more casual atmosphere. They also serve cocktails and any type of concoctions you could challenge one of their seasoned bar-keeps with, or just a simple draft from one of Michigan's own breweries, the Northland Pub has it all. The second floor Mezzanine affords you with a comfy seating area that is just right for discussing your next days outdoor adventure here in the Upper Peninsula or about your day on the slopes at Marquette Mountain. Regardless, the respectfully boisterous crowd during the weekend is always a welcoming place to be.
Your day was full of fun and excitement from seeking out the many attractions the Marquette area offers you, such as the Marquette Maritime Museum and Lighthouse or hiking the inland trails of Presque Isle Park and you just want to wind-down from the day, the North Star Lounge is your perfect, quiet little nook that sits atop of the Landmark Inn. A small cozy fireplace welcomes you along with two large windows that surrender the views of Lake Superior. The North Star Lounge is a perfect little oasis away from it all with its subdued lighting scheme and its wing-backed chairs.
The Landmark Inn did not get listed and gain title as one of the most, 'Historic Hotels of America", by the National Trust for Historical Preservation for nothing. The Landmark Inn opened its doors in 1930, and has had a rash of notable personalities and prominent figures thought its history, stay at the Landmark Inn.
If only some of the rooms could only speak, you would hear the conversations from Aviator, Amelia Earhart, who stayed in room 502 in 1932; Abbot and Costello, the famous comedians were guests who came during the war in 1942, to perform for the American Legion; Musicians, Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong, and even the singing group Peter, Paul, and Mary stayed in the Hotel Northland, as it was formally named back then.
The film industry will not be left to stand alone in this historical litany, for the cast and crew from the film; 'Anatomy of a Murder," stayed at the Landmark Inn while they filmed at the Marquette Courthouse, Big Bay, and Michigamme.
And let us not forget about our literary predecessors of pen; such as John Voelker, a local attorney and avid fisherman who wrote the book, 'Anatomy of a Murder," based on a true story for the above mentioned film. And there was also Jim Harrison who wrote, 'Legends of the Fall," and poet, Maya Angelou, known for her poetry, writing, and acting.
If it's rock'n'roll and activist that gets you going, the Rolling Stones and Gloria Steinem have been the Landmark Inn's guest as well. The list is really to long to mention, as of the many famous guests that have sought out accommodations from the Landmark Inn.
History and the occasional ghost story seems to play always hand in hand, and the Landmark Inn is no stranger to the world of its share of ghost stories. From staff members, to the dismay at times of a few of the guests of the Landmark Inn. The Landmark Inn has seen many guests of paranormal researchers, and our very own Northern Michigan University team of paranormal experts that have even documented strange "orbs" of light on film. If you ever feel as if you are being followed down the hall at night after a few cocktails in the Northland Pub, it may not be the libations, and could possible be one of the specter's that have yet to check-out.
The Landmark Inn offers accommodations that will serve almost every budget considering the rustic opulence that the Landmark Inn offers like a room for an one night stay for as little as $130 to a "Bed & Breakfast Getaway Package" that includes two nights in a luxurious guest room, breakfast for two; both of which are in the elegant Capers Restaurant, dinner for two; one night in Capers and they even include a welcome gift all for only $365.
