The Last of the Mohicans

Review Chapters 18-24

Nicholas Petre
Heyward was my favorite character in chapters 18-24. Unlike the other characters, he had to exhibit self control, be able to cope with the fact that Alice and Cora were captured, and on top of that he had to create a convincing act to make the Huron tribe believe he was a doctor. Heyward displayed self control when he posed as a doctor to get into the Huron camp, and saw that the prisoner who was competing for his life was Uncas. He showed great self restraint because he knew his mission was to secretly inform Alice and Cora that they were going to be rescued. He couldn't risk revealing his true identity and jeopardizing the whole mission so he could rescue Uncas. Throughout this whole experience, Heyward also had to deal with the fact that he may never see Alice again. Throughout chapters 18-24, Heyward was the one who was constantly in a difficult situation.

Hawkeye also plays a very important role in chapters 18-24. He calms Heyward in chapter 18, when Uncas found part of Cora's green riding veil. Heyward wanted to chase after the Hurons immediately, but Hawkeye insisted that they should carefully plan what they were going to do. Hawkeye also helps save their party from the Hurons when they try to cross a lake by canoe. He also manages to wound one of the Hurons with his long range rifle, Killdeer. He was an important character in the beginning chapters of The Last of the Mohicans and will continue to aid the group throughout the story.

Magua isn't in this section of The Last of the Mohicans very much at all. Instead, the Hurons as a group take their place as the antagonists. Heyward's group has a main priority of rescuing Alice and Cora, though they still wish to seek revenge on Magua if they get the chance. Heyward still has feelings of hatred towards the Hurons, but he does a good job of containing his emotions throughout chapters 18-24. Alice and Cora are presumed to be helpless, even though they have not spoken to Heyward and his gang since their capture, and so the party splits up and goes to rescue them. The characters personalities are really starting to develop now, and in the final section of The Last of the Mohicans, we will get to know the characters even better.
