I know, I know. It's been awhile since you've heard anything from me. Sorry, but things have been pretty F'd up in the world of Tweak recently. Not enough time, or interest from you I'm sure, to expound right now, but possibly another time. Right now I have more pressing matters to talk about... The Nobel Peace Prize.
The prize was awarded on Friday to Al Gore, who shared the coveted award with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, for his work to increase awareness of climate change and humans' effect on the world. Congrats to Gore, but that is not what I want to talk about today.
The topic of the day is what could have been. Al Gore has won an Oscar. Al Gore has won the Nobel Peace Prize. Al Gore is busting his ass to make the world a better place for everybody. Al Gore won the national election in 2000...
We all know that last sentence is not exactly accurate, though it should have been. By obtaining the most votes, Al Gore lost his bid for presidency. By coming in second, George W managed to come in first. Why? This little thing called the electoral college. Every state gets a certain number of votes, mostly based on population, and whichever candidate gets the most votes in that state wins those electoral votes. Doesn't sound like a big deal, until an election like the Gore-Bush one comes along.
Why do we have this electoral college? Basically, the founding fathers did not want candidates campaigning and paying special attention to the more populated areas. Sounds great, until you look at how many electoral votes each state gets. Example: California has 55 electoral votes, while my poor little Wisconsin has 10. Where do you hear about politicians campaigning more? California, obviously. So in all their wisdom, the creators of this nation managed to do the exact same thing they tried to prevent.
Nobody was a fortune teller, and instances like the 2000 election are not all that common in the grand scheme of things. That does not mean that this caveman era practice should not be abolished from today's political circus. If American Idol can choose a winner each and every year by popular vote, why can't we? Isn't that the way a vote is supposed to work? Whoever gets the most votes wins. Pretty damn simple, if you ask me.
So why am I bringing this up now? Let me ask you a question. By a show of hands, how many people would want a leader who has won prestigious awards, does not get involved catastrophic scandals, and is doing everything in his power to save the Earth? Now how many of you would want a man who is in the pocket of big oil, has done everything in his power to debunk those who speak out about climate change and global dimming, has caused the death of thousands of innocent Americans, wipes his ass with the Constitution, and acts like this is just a way of life we need to learn? Pretty simple question, right? Apparently not!
For some reason, over 50 million Americans got the idea that the latter sounds like the kind of guy they want to follow and be their voice to the rest of the world. Why? Temporary insanity is the only guess I have. That would explain why his approval rating has dropped to somewhere around 30%, on average. We could have had the other guy. The one that has just won the Nobel Peace Prize. We voted for the other guy, yet here we are. Kicking yourselves in the ass (yes, I said yourselves - I did not vote for the imbecile and do not consider him my President or decider), crying over the loss of so much innocent life.
I understand this is old news, especially for my rants, but apparently most people do not read the news. If we do not realize the steps that have screwed us so far, we are doomed to slip right back down them. Look at what you Bushies have done! Look at at the pain and suffering, the freedoms lost, the image of the greatest country in the rest of the world's eyes. This is what you wanted, and I hope to God that you are happy with what you see!
Until next time... Later!

Post a CommentI have always respected Al Gore. He was on "Meet the Press" and made some great points.
I wish Gore ran this year. I would have loved to see him as President. Great article.
I have limited use for Gore and am quite disappointed in Bush. Where's Alfred E Nueman when you need him?

Great artile. It's great to see Al Gore celebrated for his efforts it is well deserved.
I do stand corrected, but only to an extent, Doc. Even though we are hated a looked down upon, I do believe most countries are envious of us. At least they were, until President Airhead took office.
Let me know when you get this linked on Fanpop so I can rat it over there ;)
I am 100% behind you. Newsflash though: The US was only ever the greatest country in its own eyes.
