The League of Yogic Storytellers
Learn More About Storytime Yoga and the League of Yogic Storytellers
Developed by Sydney Solis, the League of Yogic Storytellers is a network of yoga teachers, elementary school teachers and parents who have become certified in Storytime Yoga and wish to continue growing in the tradition and process of oral storytelling.
Storytime Yoga, a brand of yoga involving oral stories and acting them out through yoga poses (asanas) is a certification that most anyone can achieve through the use of the internet. The process consists of three structured components: Awakening the Storyteller, Stories of the Heart and Mythic Yoga. This Associated Content article describes it in detail. Stories come to life through a yoga practice. Think about it. We define our lives by the stories we tell, to ourselves and others. Stories define and inspire us. We learn from them. We aspire to be like the heroes we read or hear about. Through the practice of yoga, we learn about ourselves as well; how our minds work and how our bodies and minds are deeply connected, either working together or against one another.
Storytime Yoga classes involve oral stories, sometimes from fairy tales, sometimes from the teacher's own creativity or experience. Through the Storytime Yoga Teacher Trainings, participants learn the Storytime method, which emphasizes teaching literacy, peace and character education through yoga and story. But through participation in the League of Yogic Storytellers, participants advance their skills in oral storytelling. Learning to use their own lives, teachers use the symbols that emerge from within. Sometimes through dreams, stories unfold. It is a process of trusting the process and connecting with others who are sharing these same unique gifts.
Storytime yoga is geared toward children aged 5 to 12, but can be applied to any age group, adjusting the story or message accordingly. Oral storytelling and yoga are both practices that go back to the beginning of time. They compliment each other perfectly. Truly an art form, the League of Yogic Storytellers encourages active participation and creativity from it's participants.
