The Legend of the Shadowless Sword: Worst Movie I Have Ever Seen

Movies inspire, they incite, they spur our emotions. According to the American Time Use Survey (2009), "Watching TV was the leisure activity that occupied the most time (2.8 hours per day), accounting for about half of leisure time, on average, for those age 15 and over (http://www.bls.gov/news.release/atus.nr0.htm)." For me, a good movie always touches my emotions. Whether you are inspired to stop wars, overthrow a dynasty, buy a new dress, or go on a blind date, an emotion has been stimulated in each viewer. However, only a truly well made movie can stimulate passionate emotions. Movies like, The Legend of The Shadowless Sword (2008) do the opposite. Excitement filled the air as we re-arranged our furniture to circle around the TV.

My friend popped the movie in and we all settled down to watch the film. During the beginning credits, he filled us in on the movie, The Legend of The Shadowless Sword. "I'm not sure what it is about, but Blockbuster had it on the "recommended movies" wall." So, looking forward to a thrilling film, we settled deeper into our couches and pulled the popcorn near.

As the film started, it was apparent that we would have to put the subtitles on since the movie was in Korean; not a big deal. Sadly, within minutes we could all see that this movie was a waste of money. From lousy plots, to shallow dialog (and this was not because it was being translated!) the movie bored us from beginning to end. In my opinion, witty dialog is an essential to any good movie. Without it, the movie is dry, or corny. In the case of the Legend of the Shadowless Sword, it was both.

I love a good science fiction, comedy, drama or any movie that keeps some small semblance of "reality." In this movie, I had no such luck. When the Ninjas were not having underwater battles with throwing stars, they were soaring (yes, flying) over the rooftops! And, my personal favorite, when confronted with "the shadowless sword," the person's SOUL would come ripping out of their body.

Unfortunately, a movie that you sit through, and end with the thought, "what a waste of time," has not been a successful movie. As I said in the beginning, a good movie excites the emotions. The Legend of the Shadowless Sword excited my emotions; if boredom can be called an emotion.
