The Legends of the Bermuda Triangle Revisited

Everyone loves a mystery and I am no exception! Since I was very young, I have heard tales of the strange happenings reported concerning an area of ocean expanse called the "Bermuda Triangle". This is the name given to an area of ocean expanse where numbers of verified reports of airplanes and large ships reportedly vanished out of sight, with no explanation. The boundaries of the triangle cover the Straits of Florida, the Bahamas, and the entire Caribbean island area and the Atlantic east to the Azores

"The earliest allegation of unusual disappearances in the Bermuda area appeared in a September 16, 1950 Associated Press article by Edward Van Winkle Jones. Two years later, Fate magazine published "Sea Mystery At Our Back Door", a short article by George X. Sand covering the loss of several planes and ships, including the loss of Flight 19, a group of five U.S. NavyTBM Avenger bombers on a training mission. Sand's article was the first to lay out the now-familiar triangular area where the losses took place. Flight 19 alone would be covered in the April 1962 issue of American Legion Magazine. It was claimed that the flight leader had been heard saying "We are entering white water, nothing seems right. We don't know where we are, the water is green, no white." It was also claimed that officials at the Navy board of inquiry stated that the planes "flew off to Mars." Sand's article was the first to suggest a supernatural element to the Flight 19 incident. In the February 1964 issue of Argosy, Vincent Gaddis's article "The Deadly Bermuda Triangle" argued that Flight 19 and other disappearances were part of a pattern of strange events in the region. I began to hear about these strange stories as a young teenager. I would think on these disturbing stories and the imagination would run wild. What could be the cause of these vanishings? Some were even attributing the strange phenomena to beings from outer space. It was scary stuff! Even now, as I have spent considerable time in research for this article, I find many of the reports very hard to believe, but so many are proven fact.

Just as many others, I listened to the possible explanations, but had no answers. It seems that as early as 1872 reports of mysterious losses in this area were surfacing. Many reports of missing aircraft , cruise ships and other types of ocean going vessels. One report showed a total of 125 planes known to have been lost in this general area. One report documented 5 military aircraft which were flying in a group formation vanishing without a trace! A detailed study of the various losses will boggle the mind. It seems that there are many who deny the authenticity of the stories. Reason tells me that there are far too many facts that prove the reports to be true. This has been a legend of history which just gets deeper and more mysterious as one digs into it. A true mystery such as no human imagination, however far reaching, could fabricate.

However, I want to get to the good news I have come to share with you! Just this month, a news headline caught my attention. An article was released which finally sheds some light on the old mystery. A scientific probability that methane gas bubbles could be the source of the weird phenomena.

Bermuda Triangle "Mystery" Solved With "Astounding New Insight"

"Step aside outer space aliens, time anomalies, submerged giant Atlantean pyramids and bizarre meteorological phenomena-the 'Triangle' simply suffers from an acute case of [methane] gas."

(Chicago, Illinois)-Research scientists Joseph Monaghan and David May of Australia have reportedly solved the mystery of vanished ships and airplanes in the region dubbed "The Bermuda Triangle." Their "astounding new insight" has been published in the American Journal of Physics.

Notes a report in Salem-news.com: "Step aside outer space aliens, time anomalies, submerged giant Atlantean pyramids and bizarre meteorological phenomena-the 'Triangle' simply suffers from an acute case of [methane] gas."

According to the report, "the methane-normally frozen at great pressure as gas hydrates embedded within subterranean rock-can become dislodged and transform into gaseous bubbles expanding geometrically as they explode upwards. When these bubbles reach the surface of the water they soar into the air, still expanding upwards and outwards."

"Any ships," the report continues, "caught within the methane mega-bubble immediately lose all buoyancy and sink to the bottom of the ocean. If the bubbles are big enough and possess a high enough density they can also knock aircraft out of the sky with little or no warning. Aircraft falling victim to these methane bubbles will lose their engines-perhaps igniting the methane surrounding them-and immediately lose their lift as well, ending their flights by diving into the ocean and swiftly plummeting."

How extremely fascinating! I am so relieved to learn that science has come up with an acceptable answer. The reports of some that little green men from Mars were more than likely to blame have been challenged by the findings of the learned scientific community. I have become a Christian since first hearing these stories, and have learned some things about creation and the creator which has changed the way I view many things, including these mysteries. I now know better than to fear rumors of men from Mars interfering in world affairs.

I have little comprehension of scientific language, but what I read here about the probable cause serves to settle in my mind something I have pondered on for a long time. The brilliant mind of skilled and passionate scientists is casting very much light on many ancient mysteries. Treasures of truth are hidden in the heart and mind of God. I'm grateful to Father God for the knowledge he imparts to the seeking scientist!
