The LG Voyager Vs. The Apple IPhone: A Comprehensive Guide to the Touch-Screen Throwdown

James D
With the release of the iPhone last summer, major cell phones companies scrambled to develop phones that could compete with the touch-screen wonder, whose rights were exclusively given to AT&T. A few short months later, Verizon Wireless teamed up with LG Electronics to develop the Voyager, a cell phone that would not only compete with the iPhone, but also trounce it in most areas.

The Voyager was released on November 21st of 2007 and was an instant phenomenon. Selling out within hours, and becoming even more difficult to obtain as time went on. The Voyager was the most sought after cellular device of the 2007/2008-holiday season. It delighted thousands of kids on Christmas morning and further fueled the touch-screen obsession that has now taken the cellular industry by storm.

But over a month after Voyager's long-anticipated release, the question remains: which device takes the touch-screen title? The answer is clear, as the first users stroke the large display screen of the Voyager: its superior handling, advanced features, and user friendly navigation sets the Voyager leaps and bounds above the much-hyped iPhone.

Verizon Wireless Chief Marketing Officer Mike Lanman confidently boasted: "[The Voyager] will kill the iPhone" (Reuters). And it seems he was correct. One of the significantly better features of The Voyager is its ability to unfold into a large horizontal screen, full QWERTY keyboard, and stereo speakers, features that the iPhone has no answer to. The LG model also boasts a vibrating response to touch, signaling users to their activity. Small features like these were lost on the iPhone designers, and have made a big difference for Verizon Wireless customers who once considered switching to AT&T.

Another distinct advantage offered by the LG Voyager is a removable battery, which can be replaced, while iPhone's battery is fused within the phone and upon basic wear can only be replaced by Apple for a cost. The Voyager also offers mm, or multimedia messaging, while the iPhone does not. Further, the LG Voyager can sync music, pictures, and files wirelessly to a PC while an iPhone cannot.

But a final, and for some more compelling reason to tie the 2-year knot with Verizon to obtain the Voyager is cost. LG's power-cell is offered for just over $350 with a new 2-year contract while the iPhone will cost consumers over $600 after taxes. In addition, iPhone monthly payment plans are almost $20 more than those of the Voyager, making the iPhone a wallet-lightening purchase.

Though iPhone is the most recent addition to Apple's impressive arsenal of hand held devices, it seems the company has finally been trumped, at least for now. Voyager users enjoy a slew of subtle delights that have given the phone marketable distinction and created a dominant name for touch-screen cellular phones. The Voyager was released just in time to compete with iPhone and deter potential customers from making the switch to AT&T.

well i had the iphone wen i siwtched from verizon to at&t . let me tell u its freaking amazing it has youtube ,internet, ipod, etc. but its network wasnt it was terrible my calls never went through if my battery died and i had to buy a new one!!!!!!! they would not replace it if the battery died thnk god it didnt so wen the voyager came out i imediatly switched bak and boy did i make the RIGHT DECISION its internet is faster, more calls went through,tv,music and video on the go,notes, amazing camera plus video, removalbe freaking battery, etc, and on top of all that i was with verizon again the best network in existence! besides the voyager didnt copy the iphone it was following the footsteps of the lg prada (which came out b4 the iphone was planned) and the enV and i should say that apple went to verizon first with the idea.. they turned it down for several reasons such as NO REMOVALBE FREAKING BATTERY but the main reason was that there was no security wutsoever so

Yeah i have a voyager as well and absolutly love it. my friend has an iphone, anmd dont get me wrong the iphone is great, but the voyager is a much better txter and has faster iternet. the iphones internet is slow and even though it has WIFI, a feature the voyager doesnt have, you would have to find a place the has WIFI connection. so unless u like to spead a lot of time in starbucks(a place with exclusive wifi connection) theres no point in boasting WIFI. the voyager also has model TV. u can see unlimited amount of shows from channels like CBS FOX MTV Comedy Central and others.(8 total). the iphone has no compitition to that at all.

You missed the most important feature, in my opinion, that distinguishes the two phones. The LG Voyager offers high speed 3G access, where as the iPhone only offers the much slower (and frustrating) AT&T Edge. I own the LG Voyager and have been very happy with my purchase. I wouldn't even consider getting an iPhone until 3G is offered, because I use the internet a lot on my phone.
