The Library Corner: Wyoming State Department of Education and the Utah State Library for the Blind
Happenings and Events at Libraries in America
In an effort to bring more exposure to these institutions and make the public more aware, I will be highlighting several at random. It is hoped that these learning facilities will be another fun way of adding to your knowledge. And added bonus is that most of their services are free. Some exceptions may apply.
On the Wyoming State Library website it says, "The Wyoming Department of Education, in partnership with the Utah State Library for the Blind and Disabled, provides free library service to Wyoming residents who are unable to use standard print materials due to a visual, physical, or organic reading disability".
The program is referred to as Talking Books. This service provides access to Braille and recorded books and magazines. And these items are circulated at no charge through the U.S. Postal Service. That's great news.
Eligibility Criteria is as follows:
♦ Must be legally blind
♦ The person is unable to read traditional print clearly and with comfort due to visual disabilities
♦ Limited physical capacity in not being able to hold a book, turn pages, or focus on the printed material
♦ An individual certified by a medical doctor of having a reading or learning disability or organic dysfunction
After registration and set-up, patrons are served by the Utah State Library for the
Blind and Disabled.
This is such a great collaboration with these two educational units. Now those with
visual disabilities can also enjoy the amenities of what a library has to offer in their
home.
