The Library Provides Budget-friendly Entertainment for Us

Tammy Lee Morris
To entertain kids on a budget, we look no further than our local library.

In the summer, there are free reading programs and activities for the kids.

Movie and videos are available for loan free of charge. We check out and read the latest issues of magazines we don't have the money to buy.

I love to read, as do my children, but we don't have the funds to buy new books everytime we want them. We especially can't buy the newest bestsellers we'd like to read. Not to worry - we put in a request at our library and our name goes on a waiting list. Waiting is cheaper!

We check out books constantly. Reading has become a favorite family pasttime around our house. The kids and I enjoy choosing juvenile chapter books for me to read aloud in the evenings or before bedtime.

We also like to find craft books and cookbooks for activities and recipes to try.

Sometimes we just like to go and hang out at our library. The kids will enjoy searching through the books for a Garfield book to read or a Nancy Drew or Hardy Boys mystery. Even my seven-year-old likes to pick out her own books to read.

While they're searching, I enjoy doing my own book hunts or visiting with the librarians. Since our library is in a small town where everyone knows everyone else, it's always a treat to see who pops in while we're there.

Our local library has long been our favorite vehicle for family entertainment on a budget.

Very good suggestion. Plus, they could learn a whole lot more!

I used to do this with my kids when they were little. I really miss it.
