The Lie - Republicans "support the Troops" Veterans Group Proves Otherwise

Jeff Musall
It's a tired and worn out statement, but for some reason it still has traction. "Republicans support the troops" or "conservatives for the troops" are part and parcel to right wing campaigning. Truth is, Republicans have sought to defund veterans programs and to abandon them once home.

Progressives who have been involved with veteran issues and supporting veterans have known about the disconnect between that statement and reality for years, and now a highly regarded veterans group has offered, once again, substantial proof.

Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America published their annual report card on Congress, and the results, although predictable, go against the assumption that Republicans are the party supporting the troops.

Of the 94 members of Congress who got an A or A+ from IAVA for standing with this generation of American veterans, 91 are Democrats, only 3 are Republicans. On the other side, of the 154 who got a D or an F, only 12 are Democrats, 142 are Republicans. Look at the news report HERE. Look at the IAVA report card HERE.

Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America is not a partisan group, but and advocacy organization working for Veterans issues on behalf of vets from the recent wars. And the facts speak for themselves - Democrats, especially the more progressive, care for the troops after coming home much more than their Republican counterparts.

Some of the worst examples are in the current crop of Tea candidates, like Sharron Angle of Nevada and Ken Buck of Colorado, both publicly advocating privatizing the Veterans Administration.

Republicans support sending the troops to war, they support undermining them with thousands of civilian contractors often acting independently, and they support wasteful Pentagon spending. What they don't support are the men and women coming home. They are only pro-troop when it suits them, and helps an agenda.

My father received the best care of his life from the Veterans hospital here in Portland, Oregon. That hospital, along with the facility in Denver have my thanks, gratitude, and support. That support includes voting for progressives who will champion veterans rights.

wake up veterans.....be aware of the power we hold, not as one but as a group. we must come together and organize and if necessary march into the halls of congress. we gave and now we must receive. ORGANIZE TODAY!!!

Petr Flom sums it up perfectly: Democrats support the troops. Republicans support the war... and its opportunities for profiteering.

The GOP abuses the troops by sending them off to bogus wars to die. The GOP abuses America by spending billions on bogus wars

The war in the middle east from a political and strategic point, has been handled so badly. I don't often espouse this belief but I really believe and have most of my life that the middle east should be left alone. Oil trade has done nothing for the US other than create a state of dependency that has cost many lives. I am a firm believer that third world countries and Middle Eastern countries should have been and should be now, allowed to advance on their own. There are too many religious and social differences that make trade and socialization almost impossible.

Democrats support the troops. Republicans support the war.

Thank you for writing this. While I support all help for the veterans, I am appalled that the troops are being misused in this way. National Guard troops should be guarding the nation. We are making the view of Americans one of invading soldiers in full battle garb. I liked it better when the ugly Americans just wore shorts and cameras.

yeah they send them off to war and abandon them when they're home. that was always my concern for my brother. thank goodness he's okay but still he has friends who are not okay and pulling funding for them as 'too high a liability' just isn't right
