The Life Thoreau-ly Lived

Renee Fischer
"Let us spend one day as deliberately as nature, and not be thrown off the track by every nutshell and mosquitoes' wing that falls on the rails" (Shrodes 886).

In this passage of Thoreau we discover in rich language the meaning of a simple life. If not all our endeavors weak, then at least some are. For all the toil mankind does have we see that he rides himself into the grave without really living.

I agree with him that a few institutions like the post office could be done without, after all before we had them what did we do? There were more meaningful forms of communication. Not only were there more meaningful words spoken, often only necessary ones were. We often also rush from one activity to another without really enjoying any at all. We could all live life more simply, in some ways I agree with him on this, more simple meals, even less meals.

We should enjoy one or two simple dishes, and snack the rest of the day only when we get hungry. But each time we eat we should strive to eat slowly and savor each bite. I believe to that each moment in life will never come again. Therefore we should enjoy each moment as we shall never have it again.

Life cannot be thoroughly lived if we rush off to hear latest gossip, or strive for riches. Also every war or killing or accident that has ever happened is just like another. Why bother ourselves and stress ourselves over each and every one. We are just wasting our time and wasting our lives. Do we really wish to be like little old ladies who read yesterdays news over tea? It was yesterday's news, why even bother to read it. Furthermore what cares we do have should involve bothering ourselves in having less cares.
