For first timers who want travel outside of the United States, I always recommend a tour with a legitimate tour company. These companies have tours that range from 3 days to over 20 days all over the world. I would recommend a 7 - 10 day tour at the beginning. Once you have chosen a tour, all of your needs are taken care of from the moment you land into that country. You would of course have your flight information and all of your documents and tour schedule with you prior to departing. They will have someone there waiting for you at the airport to take you to the hotel and there you will be greeted by your tour guide.
All of the tour guides are knowledgeable in all areas of that country from where to convert American currency to foreign currency, to areas that should not be visited while you are there. You will feel safe and secure when you have other people with you and a guide who speaks the language and is there to take care of you.
I have many repeat clients that take tours every year with the same company because they know the reputation of that particular company. Even though they are experienced travelers, they still take a tour that is going to places they have never been. Once you have experienced a tour, you can always go back to that country on your own because you will know where to go, what to see and maybe even take in more sightseeing.
For those that do not want a tour and want to go on their own. I suggest that they do research on that country and that is where a travel agent can be very helpful. Also, if someone wants to take a trip on their own, I would recommend that they set up tours once they get to that country. Many of the hotels have concierge desks where they could help you set up tours. If you book tours in the United States, you are locked into those tour dates. If you cancel or change a tour, you can be charged a penalty. So beware- and don't be afraid to ask, ask, ask!
HAPPY TRAVELS!
