The Little Mermaid Travels from Denmark to China

The Little Mermaid, the famous landmark in Copenhagen, Denmark is traveling to Shanghai for several months for her first trip out of Denmark. The statue departed from her home on March 25, 2010 to be displayed at EXPO 2010 in Shanghai, China. While The Little Mermaid in in China, her sister statue, a replica, will be on display in Tivoli Garden in Copenhagen.

Descendants of sculpture Edward Eriksen made the replica Little Mermaid statue available while the original statue is in China, so people who want to see The Little Mermaid in Copenhagen still will be able to do so.

The Little Mermaid will be on loan to Shanghai for EXPO 2010 from May 31 to October 31, 2010. The beloved statue's departure was marked by a Danish/Chinese ceremony at Langeline, with officials bidding the beloved statue bon voyage.

The mermaid has been the victim of vandalism, been beheaded twice and has had her arm cut off. This is the first time that the statue has left Denmark. The loan of The Little Mermaid to is part of a cultural exchange between Denmark and China. There will be a video of the statue in her place in Copenhagen, while she is away

The Little Mermaid will be situated in the Harbour Pool in the center of the Danish Pavilion at EXPO 2010. At the EXPO visitors will have the opportunity to try some of the best aspects of Danish life.

The Little Mermaid is the subject of a Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale, written in 1837, which became a Disney film. The mermaid as had a mystique for generations.

The statue of The Little Mermaid was commissioned in 1909 by Carl Jacobsen, who had been fascinated by a ballet about the fairytale. The sculptor Edvard Eriksen created the statue, suing a ballerina's face and his wife's body as models. The statue was unveiled in 1913.

The Shanghai EXPO, which runs from May through October, expects 70 million visitors, according to the EXPO website. The event will highlight different cultures from around the world and promote understanding between different cultural groups.
