The Living Night

Amanda R. Dollak
The pain that surrounds me
Threatens to swallow me whole;
My heart struggles to break free
As haunting midnight bells toll.
Sorrow chills me to the bones,
Even in the noonday sun . . .
My heavy soul grunts and groans,
Waging war that's never won.
Worn and weary, I call out,
Seeking relief from above:
Lord, I'm drowning in doubt--
O, please, tell me, where's Your love?!
I have heard glorious tales
Of miracles You've performed:
Stories of floods and whales;
Of healings of sick and deformed.
Yet, in this darkened world,
Where I'm captive and alone,
Savage life has hirled
Me into a land of stone.
Coldness and death invade me
Where once Your warmth did dwell;
If it weren't for this breath in me,
I would swear I was in Hell!
Take this living night away,
And once more show me Your face;
Yes, heal this torn soul today
And mend me in Your embrace.
