The Lizards of Patioland

My Little Friends from My Garden

Charles Melius

They live in the plants by the patio stones.
Our reptiles of Florida from long past time zones.
Short legs and long tails,
Living with snails.
They'll run and jump from their sunny warm thrones.

These odd little creatures all dressed in Grey-black.
You'd think them so docile until they attack.
Intruders beware,
Don't ever dare,
Come even close to their personal tract.

Each with their own little snuggly spot.
Apart from the others, cross them do not.
For war will ensue.
Not like in a zoo.
Surly you'll find them wrapped up in a knot.

Mouths clenched together in fierce embrace.
Twisting and turning each one to unlace.
One must release.
The other will cease.
Their battle soon over without a trace.

When 'Friendly' the cat creeps bye, nary a sound.
Each scurry and hide like as none to be found.
Off to a safe zone,
Under a cool stone.
Soon they'll come out when no danger is round.

Sometimes I've seen the big Snowy Egret.
Sneak in the garden to find him a treat.
With quick steady eye,
One lizard say "bye".
Fly off to the pond to digest it complete.

The little land dragons I like watching so.
Lay eggs under rotted wood. Off then they go,
About their sweet lives,
In such small size,
The offspring must fend alone if they're to grow.

My garden in Florida is just not complete.
Without these small wonders to see I repeat.
Mother Nature at best,
Has filled them with zest.
Giving us one of Her marvels replete.
