The Big Bend Country covers nearly 41,000 square miles from Midland Odessa to the Northeast and Del Rio to the Southeast. It is bordered by New Mexico on its Westside and Mexico on its Southside. Big Bend is full of history and culture. It is also home to two presidents, a famous musician, and the world's largest telescope.
This is the best place for nature lovers. There are acres and acres of wilderness. You can hike, bike ride, bird watch, swim raft, camp, photograph, and paint. Texas' first National Park is the Big Bend National Park . It is the size of Rhode Island. There is too much of; it to see in one visit. You'll see sand dunes, one of the Nation's largest oak forest, Balm rhea State Park has on of the largest man-made pools I he U. S. Well over a 100 years ago, pioneers, cowboys, gold seeker travelled through this area. Due to the hostile conditions for these pioneers and travelers they came about the making of Ft. Bliss, Fort Davis, and Dort Stockton.
The Big Bend had had its share of gunfights, band robberies, saloons and boon towns. It is a final resting place of lots of gunfighters. Langtry is the place where Judge Roy Bean reigned. He had a place called the rustic saloon, courthouse billiard hall and opera house. His resting place is in Del Rio at the Whitehead Memorial Museum.
El Paso has the best of the past and the future merged together. It is the largest city on Mexico's border. There are plenty of historic sites there. You can visit the Tigua Indian Restoration at Yesleta. You can attend a concert or see a performance at the Chamizal National Memorial.
This is the place of the unexplained Marfa Lights. There are chili cook-offs. You can also see some of Shakespeare's productions held at the Globe of the Great Southwest theatre in Odessa. You'll be able to hunt precious minerals at the Woodward Agate Ranch in Alpine. Before you head out to this region get a map. Know the city locations because the region has lots of miles of desert. Plan your trip with destinations and attractions mapped out, also rest areas.
