The Longest Video Games I've Ever Played

Video Games Beat Out Movies Any Day They Provide Hours Upon Hours of Entertainment

Nicholas Ward
I have certainly played a lot of long video games in my time. I love RPG games because they provide hours upon hours of entertainment, and many of them feature a re-playability level that far exceeds any other game genre. With that said here is my list of the top five longest video games I've ever played.

Longest Video Games I've Ever Played #1, Final Fantasy 7.

Final Fantasy 7 is a great RPG with a kind of technology setting and an awesome, but sometimes uninspired or hard to follow story line. This game took me well over 70 hours to complete the first play through, and that's not counting all the bonus content in it. I probably played this game through at least 10 times total. By the time you finish the game you can barely remember how it started, which just begs you to play through again.

Longest Video Games I've Ever Played #2, Tales Of Symphonia.

Believe it or not this is one of the longest video games ever created, I blame this in part to the fact that after you complete the game the first play through, you can go through the "Endless Dungeon," a great bonus. As you go through this dungeon, floor by floor you take on more powerful creatures than you can find anywhere else in the game.

This game also features a combo system which gives you points. At the end of the game you can use these points to acquire new game + bonuses. You can use these bonuses for another play through, I believe my first play through on this game was at least 80 hours.

Longest Video Games I've Ever Played #3, Chrono Trigger.

This RPG was one of the first to incorporate the new game + feature and was the first to incorporate an involving multiple ending scenario. Chrono Trigger is highly regarded as the greatest RPG of all time by many RPG fans. Though computer RPG fans may disagree, even they must admit that during the time it was produced it was one of the longest and most involving games. Chrono trigger has multiple endings and great character animations, as well as well over 200+ hours of game play to get all of the endings.

Longest Video Games I've Ever Played #4, Final Fantasy 3. (6 in japan)

This RPG has a relatively linear story line. However, the game play is incredible, the story is fantastically put together and the character personalities really grow on you. There is one point in the game where you're sure you have lost shadow, and it makes you want to cry. However, If you wait long enough for him he will show up and jump on board your airship at the last minute. If you do not wait however, you will miss out on a lot of content, and have to play through again to see the alternate content.

It's amazing how this was Incorporated into Final Fantasy 3, because it gave Final Fantasy 3 a Chrono trigger type hidden ending. There are many more easter eggs that are dependent upon you awaiting your friend shadows arrival. These include dreams which can only be had if he is in your party after the destruction of the world by kefka. Final Fantasy 3 also adopted the new game + function that made Chrono Trigger so great.

Longest Video Games I've Ever Played #5, Baiten Kaitos.

This game has a very interesting twist to the turn based RPG you're use to. The system was developed by the TV shows which Incorporated card games into their shows. You may be familiar with the Yugi Oh style card combat system. Baiten Kaitos adopts the Yugi Oh combat system making things a bit more interesting then the ordinary RPG, rather then simply selecting a spell to cast, or attacking, you are given random cards. You must choose from the cards you are issued during every turn. While you may have hundreds of skills, you can only use the ones you get by luck of draw.

Closing

After completing this article, I feel a sudden urge to go back and play some of these games through again. That should tell you just how great they are, so when you go out shopping for some really involving and great games don't forget the ones you read about here in "The Longest Video Games I've Ever Played."

  • Final Fantasy 4 through 9 where some of the best in the series.
  • Chrono trigger has several remakes for a variety of different consoles.
  • By far Tales of Symphonia wins my longest Video Game award.
Final fantasy was once an explore all world, in which you could pilot an air ship, ride chocobos, Tame beasts, and meet new people, who progressed the story through witty dialogue. With more recent Final Fantasy games much of this is gone.

Gotta love the anime opening. For that time in video games, that opening was about as close to nudity in a video game as you got. XD Xeno Saga wasn't bad either for the PS2 had a nice shower scene as well.

Whoa I actually have I remember it now that you mention it lol. 120 hours into that one the first play through I think, but I don't remember it having a new game plus, sadly neither did FF7 QQ

Well, you should play Xenogears. It was longer than FFVII.
