Many of its concerts are free (almost free with little if any cost to the public), and the orchestra has also been actively involved in raising charities through its concerts and the likes. As a result of the orchestra's activities; the orchestra welcomes monetary contributions which can be mailed to their address on their website. All pertinent information in regards to the orchestra's yearly concerts, contributions, and/or any additional information can be found on their website: www.ladso.org.
For the 2008-2009 season, the orchestra has scheduled 5 concerts. The first concert was held on 11-22-08 Plummer Park Auditorium in West Hollywood, CA; the second concert was held on 3-6-09 Culver City (CA) Veterans Memorial Auditorium. There are still three concerts left in their 2008-2009 season: 5-17-09, 5-31-09, and the last one will be held on 6-7-09 (visit their website: www.ladso.org for additional information).
Because the orchestra is open to the public and to community in general; the orchestra mostly performs traditional classical music (baroque, classical, and romantic period), be it they do a pretty good job at it.
Amongst some of the charities the orchestra has been involved in are: Elderhostel; on 3-18-98, the orchestra dedicated this concert to the famous world renowned organization for adults.
The orchestra's website also shares "Podium notes." In the orchestra's website: Dr. Schulman expresses his feelings of a September-1999 concert in which the orchestra performed Beethoven's 9th Symphony.
The ladso orchestra just isn't giving as many concerts as they once were a decade or so ago. Since the orchestra receives much of its funding from people/charity, with the economy on the decline as it is; the ladso like many other symphony orchestras could be having financial difficulties. Also, classical music is on the decline. People who have the financial means would much rather go to the Walt Disney Music Hall in Downtown Los Angeles (even if their concerts aren't free), than to see a community orchestra. Ivan Schulman has done an excellent job as its musical director.
