The Lost Room-A Great Gift for a Sci-Fi Fan

Information on One of the Best, Least-Known Shows

Ben Eubanks
What would you do with a key that would open any door? That question was faced by the main character played by Peter Krause in the show "The Lost Room."

"The Lost Room" was a TV miniseries that appeared on the Sci-Fi Channel in December 2006. It was meant to be a pilot for a longer-running show, but it was canceled due to low viewership. However, the low viewer numbers doesn't take into account the number of people like me that have purchased "The Lost Room" DVDs. These DVDs include all episodes from the miniseries, and I recommend them highly. If there is enough attention on the show, then there is a distinct possibility of a revival (according to some people closely tied to the series).

"The Lost Room" starts with Joe (played by Peter Krause) finding the key described above. When his daughter becomes lost, Joe will stop at nothing to get her back safely. Without giving away too much of the plot, "The Lost Room" is a hotel room in Gallup, New Mexico. Something referred to as "The Event" happened in the room back in the 60s, and every single object in the room was changed somehow. The items are normal, everyday paraphernalia in the room, but when they are taken out of the room, they are given special powers. For example, the key can open virtually any door in the world instantaneously. Another example is the comb. The comb allows a person to stop time for ten seconds for the person holding the object. The comb's power is activated by the user brushing his or her hair. There are dozens of potential powers, so that would have made for quite a few storylines if the series had continued to be produced.

If you're like me, and happened to see the series late, then there is still a place to go to celebrate all things associated with "The Lost Room." The Collectors is a forum created to sate the appetite of fans of "The Lost Room." (I have used the logo for The Collectors forum to the left of my article.) There are sections in The Collectors forum for making introductions (The Motel Room), displaying prop replicas (The Vault), learning about behind-the-scenes action (The Order), and several others. After seeing the show for the first time, I visited the forums to talk to other fans and learn more about "The Lost Room" overall.

One great aspect of The Collectors forum is that the show's producers visit often and even give little tidbits to satisfy the fans' appetite for more knowledge about "The Lost Room." While they are careful not to give away anything important (in case the show is revived in the future), the information they do give is exciting and helpful. Many members of the Collectors forum enjoy making or finding their own replicas of The Objects, and the producers can sometimes give a description of an item that would otherwise be impossible to find.

If you are interested, check out "The Lost Room" DVD at Amazon or visit The Collectors forum. It could become your new favorite DVD! If there is a Sci-Fi fan in your family, this could be a great choice to purchase for them.

  • The DVD is available at Amazon for under $7!
Some of the fans of the show sell prop replicas on eBay, if you know where to look.

This really intrigued me, but I kept missing the airings. Thanks for the recommendation. As a writer who wrote for 'Star Trek: The Next Generation' & 'Deep Space Nine' - I'm a real Sci-Fi fan, and was one long before I wrote professionally. I hope Syfy continues to bring more 'cerebral' science fiction like this one to air. I love action, but it can be hollow without substantive story. This sounds like just the right balance.

Like I said, The Lost Room DVD is really cheap on Amazon, so even if you hate it (you won't), it wouldn't be a big expense. :-)

This sounds really cool, like something my hubby and I would both enjoy. Thanks!

    Hello again, samaira... :-)

They had the religious zealots attempting to capture the Objects from the Lost Room later on, but that just made it more interesting with all of the competing groups.

Interesting, though honestly the first season was the best after that they got really "spiritual" versus keeping it Sci Fi. (I like the idea though, maybe an Asimov room?)

    Yep. Had great potential!
