Everyone has a story to tell about who makes them who they are. How is my story any different? What have I found that other people would have searched for and not found? Peace in the middle of a storm? Joy in the face of pain? A smile when tears flood the eyes and threaten to fall? Are any of these things worth discovering? If so, then my seeker friend- read on.
It started with a dream. A simple dream planted in childlike faith that might never have been realized. Like glitter dust spun fairy tales held within a young girl's heart, my dream was to find a love like none other. The kind of love that was unconditional and knew no bounds. And as any Princess wannabe, I sought a brave knight in shining armor to slay the mighty dragons that stood in the path to my happiness. A courageous hero to then take me to a kingdom far, far away and live happily ever after.
There are no such dragons in today's society, you say? What about the dragons of depression, fear, hopelessness, sorrow, low self-esteem, lack of self-worth, and despair. Do any of these sound like a familiar enemy? If you've ever been pulled under by the tides of dark waters, my story may very well have started out like yours too.
The spoiled Princess Wannabe went about life whining and complaining about the least discomfort when she had no idea what real suffering was about. Sacrifice was something only the Holiest people did. like those who went on things like mission trips to convert souls for some future they talked of that seemed more of a fairy tale than the Princess' delusions.
In vain, the Princess expected that the world revolve around her slightest whim or desire. Surely, her demands were not unreasonable, she thought. She just wanted what she believed any woman wanted... a perfect life with the perfect husband to adore her and tell her how wonderful she was. Of course, she would never have admitted that, if she ever thought it consciously in so many words and she would have chosen other ways to describe it than would seem acceptable.
Still for all her faults, she did mean well. She wanted to help people, not go too far out of her way and not out of her comfort zones, but otherwise, she wanted to be helpful. Just at no real personal cost. And if it made her look better in the process, that was a bonus.
Years passed... and the more things did not go the way she wanted them too, the more freely she would complain and moan about life being unfair. Now, with all that said, how do you suppose anyone could resist being drawn to such a woman? Not! And yet, even though she was the way she was, there were people who loved her beyond her faults. People who loved her even when they were taken for granted. But the Princess' perception of love was so warped that she was blind to what was already there all along.
Then one day a gentleman came to court her heart and win the favor of the Princess. For many years he had knocked softly at the door but she kept turning him away. He came to her as a humble carpenter's son, while she looked for that knight to rescue her. He had no shining armor to cover him in battle. Instead it looked like he had been defeated in war. He bore deep wounds that appeared on his hands and feet and in his side. And without even looking him in the eyes beyond the rest of his appearance, she shooed him away while that knight she looked for never came.
She sunk down into a bitter depression and deep despair over the state of her life. Why had her dreams never materialized? What had she done wrong? She became apathetic to life and barely survived one day to the next, never knowing what it was like to live life to the fullest. Then one day, her humble suitor came to call again and this time as she started to turn him away, she looked up for a moment into his eyes. Eyes that shone with love like none she had ever known. The tenderness she saw there, melted her icy heart and she kneeled before him and asked him to forgive her for ever turning his love away. She saw in that moment how cruel she was to him and that she was not worthy of love such as his. She begged him not to leave her all alone there in the dark. Suddenly, the man transformed before her into a mighty King. And he told her about a mansion he would prepare for her with streets of gold where they would one day live together for all eternity. He would have to go to make the arrangements but he would leave her a comforter, a guide, to be with her until he came back for her.
After he left, he sent her love letters through her guide that she read over and over as she learned more about her future husband. And the more she learned, the more she loved him and the more she learned how to love. It was his love for her that transformed her and she radiated with joy even when life grew more and more challenging. She never again needed to feel alone as long as she knew his love. And when her fiancé's love healed her heart, she opened it to those people who were around her and she learned to love others and see that there were others who had been in the grips of pain and loneliness and her heart ached for them. So... once upon a time, she wrote this story for them.
