The Magic of American Idol

Grammy awards, sold out concerts, number one albums and singles are all perks associated with each American Idol winner. How did a simple singing competition turn unknown performers into two of the most popular artists in music today?

Season one brought us Kelly Clarkson. This sweet, wholesome, Texas girl demanded the audience's attention every time she opened her mouth. Shortly after Kelly was crowned, her first album, Thankful, debuted at number one on the Billboard Chart, a feat that is not only next to impossible for a brand new artist, but is also difficult to accomplish for the most established of musical talent. A couple years later, Kelly followed up Thankful with her sophomore release, Breakaway. The album includes mega hits, Breakaway, Since U Been Gone, Behind These Hazel Eyes, and Walk Away. Two grammy awards and millions of record sales later, Kelly Clarkson is truly a force to be reckoned with on the pop charts.

After the first season, I began to wonder if American Idol could find talent that could compare to that of Kelly Clarkson's. Ruben Studdard and Fantasia Barrino also received the American Idol title, but their stars seemed to fade shortly after their careers started.

My doubts went away as a young girl from Oklahoma took the stage and introduced American Idol fans to her version of country music.

The country music world now claims season four winner, Carrie Underwood, as it's own. Carrie's mix of soaring vocals and down home twang is a refreshing twist on today's Nashville sound. Millions of loyal country fans bought her debut album, Some Hearts. With hits such as, Jesus Take The Wheel, Don't Forget to Remember Me, and Before He Cheats, Carrie is destined to join the ranks of country royalty.

What makes the two most popular winners of American Idol different from the average fresh faced, new artist? Why did their stars rise while other American Idol alumni have used up their 15 minutes of fame? American Idol not only showcases an artist's vocal ability, their personality is featured along with every power ballad they belt. It's just as important to come across as relatable and down to earth as it is to hit every note with perfect pitch, something both Clarkson and Underwood are professionals at. Girls want to be their friends and boys want to date them. Combine those pleasing personalities with vocal talent, perfect hair and makeup and you've got magic that makes over 30 million people tune into Fox every week.
