The Maine Coon Cat: How to Make Sure This is the Pet for Your Family

Kitty Stevens
Behavior of the Maine Coon cat is very different from your average feline. You have to make sure this is the cat for your family. They are highly intelligent and will let you know that. If left to their own vices they will become destructive. They need to have entertainment to be happy. If you do not have the time to devote to this feline then you should not add this cat to your family.

Many times they up getting in trouble simply because they are bored out of their minds. You must provide toys, windows to perch on and company. This will help them lead happy and healthy lives. Failure to recognize this will lead to a cat that is mentally deranged and not a happy camper at all. Take that serious and you will have a better result with your cat.

They can actually be trained like a dog could. If you like you can teach them tricks. They will enjoy it too. They make lovely show cats for anyone that enjoys that sort of event. Groom this cat to the height of their best and train them for any cat show. You will be a hit for sure. They will have a fantastic time from the grooming and attention to the learning of tricks. The show will offer them the chance to be the stars that they know themselves to be. Their paws are very large and they are often able to catch things easily with their paws. Play games and train them in ways that enhance this ability. They will enjoy this and you will have hours of entertainment from your Maine Coon.

The State of Maine Coon Independence

If your Maine Coon were allowed to do it they would declare the home theirs and call you only when they require your presence. They are fiercely independent and resist any attempt at being made into lap cats. This is intolerable to these kitties. So don't even try it. Unless you want to be swiftly and harshly corrected for it by their paws and worse, claws. They are affectionate of course when they wish to be so. The best way to be good company to your Maine Coon is to be available to them. They are happy to walk around as a shadow and feel that they of course, are showing you where to go.

Food and Nutrition for the Main Coon

Maine Coon cats requires special food in order to remain healthy and happy as well. They eat more than most cats. The average daily intake is 7 grams of food per meal. This will vary by the season and health of your kitty but that is the average. If they aren't eating that much then you should take them to the vet to be seen.

Make sure that you choose a larger hard food to be the staple of their diet. This helps them keep their teeth clean. Maine Coon cats tend toward dental problems. So be sure to watch for that to keep kitty in the best health possible. Healthy teeth and gums mean a healthy Maine Coon cat. While they will prefer wet food make sure that they have a bit of dry food as well. The recommendation is to have some dry food around for them to eat. Then offer them a bit of wet for one meal of the day. This way they get some more water from the wet food and still have the dry food to help with their teeth.

Conclusion

The behavior of Maine Coon cats is a wonderful addition to any household that offers much activity and entertainment. If you work all day and live alone do the cat a favor and choose another breed. This is not the cat for you. If however, you are looking for a cat that is like a dog in their fun and activity then the Maine Coon is as close as you can get.

I've heard of this cat, oddly enough. In fact, it may be from an AC piece! Certainly with five cats already (plus a ferret, two dogs and a hamster), I'm not in need of a new pet.
