In the 1960s and today, feminism is pervasive. Gender discrimination was a big problem for women who were qualified and had the prerequisites and degrees for job positions that were opened but were over looked and substituted by unqualified males who "needed the work." Also, the feminist movement helped equal pay and equal responsibilities to be put into play. Women mastered the art of child bearing through birth-control pills and abortions and in the 1980s and through the 1990s women's emancipation was done through social and political movements through speeches and policies for women not to be sexual harassed in the workplace and to deal with rape to make sure it was symbolized as a crime.
The feminist movement helped promote equal rights for women and stopped the fight against gender discrimination in the public agenda. As a result, Women have slowly but surely changed Americans beliefs about the relationships between men and women. These changes caused alterations in family life today in which viewing women as fully equal individuals.
Because of the feminist movement, women are more pervasive in Congress. Sandra Day O'Connor was the first woman on the United States Supreme Court in 1981. Janet Reno was the first woman to serve as Attorney General. Madeleine K. Albright was the first to serve as Secretary of State and so on. Today, we now have a woman to run for president.
Women have come a long way. But have we as women abused our advantages with these great endeavors we have accomplished?
Women modesty and elegancy have withered away over time. Women have been overly boisterous than modest, believing modesty is a sign of weakness instead of power. Women used to be considered more elegant because we knew how to "handle" ourselves even when we were up against pressure or other people's attitudes especially when it was coming from our husbands. However, today's time is a little different. Women are not quite like they used to be since we have much freedom. We took advantage of our "freedom of speech" not clearly understanding that it is better to be quiet.
During the time the feminist movement began, we knew when to speak because it was relevant to speak. However, women are more flamboyant and working out of their positions as women. We become more controlling, loud, and very impulsive, being dishonored by our children and husbands.
Sad to say, These behaviors do come from past hurts such as being battered in a relationship or marriage, being molested as a child, lack of a father or whatever the situation that causes women to live with arbitrary behavior.
This should still not be an excuse to be an unwise women. If women could go back to being true mothers and true wise and virtuous women like they were during the first beginning of the women's movement, life for children and families would be much better.
