Lavender essential oil contains a small amount of alcohol. The alcohol kills bacteria and viruses while also speeding up the healing process of minor burns and cuts. Ester compounds found in lavender prevent scarring. They will also fight fungal infections, reduce swelling, relieve pain and reduce soreness.
Use a few drops of lavender essential oil in your last hair rinse while in the shower or straight onto your hair brush to help with dandruff. Dab a small amount onto acne prone areas of your skin in the morning and at night. If you have red blemishes it will help reduce the redness and swelling. If you have a sunburn add a few drops of lavender oil to a spray bottle filled with water. Add a few drops of oil straight to your bath water to get the aroma and medicinal effects at once.
Lavender is the perfect herb to use in herbal pillows. You can make one by taking any pillow you have and sewing a pocket onto it. To make it decorative you can use lace or a pretty fabric that allows you to see the purple colored lavender you will put inside. Once you fill the pocket remember to sew the top closed so it can't fall out. Place pillows like this on your bed or places where you like to relax.
Drink a cup of lavender tea before going to bed to promote good sleep. You can drink it by itself or mix with any mint tea you have on hand. It also works well with chamomile. Make this tea like you do your other herbal teas. One tsp of lavender to one cup of water. Bring the water to a rapid boil, remove from heat and then add the lavender. Let it sit for 5 minutes and then strain.
Lavender can also spice up your laundry. Take a cheese cloth and fill it with the dried herb. Tie the top with a string and make sure nothing can fall out. Add this to your next dryer load and all of your clothes will smell like fresh lavender. You can use the sachet for at least 20 loads. Add a few drops of essential oil to make the smell even stronger.
Most people don't think of lavender while in the kitchen but it actually taste good on salads. You can mince it or put it in the blender with some olive oil. It will make a purple colored salad dressing that has a light, sweet taste.
