Some snails that you can purchase will help you clean up the tank. Some of the snails will get very large and clean your glass, rock and decorations. Some snails will stay very small and they are pretty much useless. It's best to have large snails in your freshwater tank because you don't have to worry about them knocking anything over. You can simply place the snail in the tank and not worry about it destroying coral or invertebrates. Freshwater snails will not hurt anything unless there is a dead fish in the tank and then they will probably stick to the fish at times.
If you purchase small snails you will need to be careful because some snails will breed like crazy. Once you have a snail problem in your fish tank it's almost impossible to get rid of. You will want to ask the pet store workers which snails would work good for a freshwater tank. Ask them what snails will breed in your aquarium. You don't want to develop a snail problem that you cannot get rid of. A few snails are nice but not hundreds of snails in your fish tank. I know you might not think that snails could turn into a problem, but they can if you do not purchase the right snail.
Before purchasing any types of snails you will want to do your research. You do not want to purchase the wrong type of snail and develop some type of snail problem. You will want to research all of the different snails before you purchase any. Some people at the pet stores will tell you that you wont have a problem but in fact you will develop a problem. There's nothing you can do once you get a snail problem so you want to make sure you avoid it. Only purchase snails that you know will not breed in your aquarium.
