The first time I stepped into this Highland Square store, I really had no idea what to expect. But I was certainly not disappointed. Delicious chocolate. One of a kind jewelry. Handmade soaps. These are just a few of the ethnic treasures that the Market Path has to offer. I was in awe as I walked through and found some of the most unique and well-made items I've seen to date. That day I was on a mission to find a new purse or handbag, and there was a variety to choose from. I settled on a shoulder bag-- patched together from old Guatemalan skirts. The best part of the purchase? An affordable price with confidence that the women sewing this item got paid a fair wage. It was worth every penny.

There's more to be said about the Market Path, however. It's not just about the quality products. I was greeted by a friendly face and educated on the ethics behind the purchasing of the products that we consumers in turn buy. If you're looking to shop for a good cause, the Market Path should be the first step of your journey. The business thrives on the idea of fair trade, diversity, social justice, and advocating all of these ideals. They are much more concerned with raising awareness than they are turning a profit. The prices themselves are incredibly reasonable. I bought my purse for $25, and the many pairs of earrings I was lovingly eyeing were between $5-7 for a pair. Not bad at all.

Working in conjunction with the Market Path is First Grace United Church of Christ, who offer a variety of community oriented programs. These include free hot meals for unfortunate families of the community, hosting the Akron AIDS collaborative, and a community wellness program. The Market Path encourages everyone to volunteer for these programs, regardless of religious affiliation. The Market Path also has hosted a variety of events, including a weekly "free henna Friday" and a drum circle every other Saturday through August and September. More events are likely to come and very welcome among Akronites.

So if you're looking to do some shopping-- especially with the coming holiday season, I would suggest checking out The Market Path. You can buy your loved ones unique and special gifts while at the same time make a difference. What more could you ask for?
