The Masters Golf Tournament

Each spring, as the cool of winter slowly fades, Augusta, Georgia hosts the most prestigious major on American soil, The Masters Golf Tournament. Known not only for its beauty, the Masters boasts a legacy surpassing seven decades that includes famous winners such as Sam Snead, Byron Nelson, Ben Hogan, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, and Tiger Woods. This great legacy stirs a passion in both professional and amateur golfers to have their names etched in the list of champions and to wear the one and only green jacket given to each year's champion. This year is no different. On the second Sunday of April, a new champion will be crowned but the title is only the beginning of the beauty and history The Masters Golf Tournament offers.

The History of The Masters Golf Tournament

In the early 1900's, Augusta, Georgia experienced a steep increase in tourism. Tourist who had play golf in other parts of the country began to introduce the sport to the area. Various golf courses were constructed including the Augusta National where The Masters of Golf Tournament is held. Initially, the designers hoped to host the U.S. Open, but eventually decided on hosting their own golf tournament. This move paved the way to a historical tournament that few other majors can compare. Fans from around the world praise the tournament as the "Super Bowl" of golf majors.

The Beauty of The Masters Golf Tournament

One need only glance on the Augusta National to view the awe-inspiring beauty. The greenest grass in the world is only enhanced by blooming dogwoods and azaleas that line the fairways. Like any other golf courses, August offers ponds to guard the luscious greens, however, Augusta's ponds are picture perfect blue. Though it may seem this beauty is man made, the opposite is true. The Masters Golf Tournament prides itself on providing natural beauty. The result is a prime example of Mother Nature at her best. Due to the location of the course, the land provides the perfect conditions for optimal growth. This allows the course to produce the beautiful colors the thousands flock to each year. Once you've experience the course at The Masters of Golf Tournament, you will be hard pressed to find a comparable course anywhere in the world.

The Green Jacket of The Masters Golf Tournament

One of the most enduring symbols of The Masters Golf Tournament is the green jacket given to the winner each year. The jacket is a sign of prestige in the club and the previous year's winner presents the jack to each year's champion. Although the green jacket may seem simple, it is actually highly valuable and hand made to perfectly fit the winner. The jacket is woven out of wool and the winner's name is stitched on the inside. The Masters Golf Tournament champion can wear the green jacket for one year. After the year is over, the jacket must be returned and not worn again. Though the time period is short, having the green jacket for one year is a dream of every golfer.

The Masters Golf Tournament combines history, beauty, and prestige to create one of the word's best professional golf tournaments. Each year golfers battle it out for four days to become part of the legacy. Though few ever reach that pinnacle, the experience will never be forgotten. Both fans and players a like leave Augusta National with a picture of beauty they will never forget.
