The May Fogs

The May Fogs
(a poetry of unsent letterings)

Slowly he gets himself back
to the task of living.
Some time since the last
of his past stepped as quiet,
unexpected, as it entered
a life; stepped away, cutting
all ties.

Past steps from past -
leaves a soul to wander
through a fog expected
to lift, to thin, but this fog?

Does not - not truly.

Past steps from past -
leaves no answer, no
break, no release - leaves
only heat, a soul, a mind
to fumble through the grey
thick of unanswered, unstated,
was nots.

Past steps from past -
a lingering veil which, looked
straight through? Impenetrable
to the eye - leaves a mind
to wonder where, when,
the end may lie.

Past steps from past -
leaves a fog to be burned off
only by the eye able
to look sideways
through its
non-existence.
