The Maya Wrap- a Great Way to Avoid the Controversy of Breast-feeding in Public
Ditch the Controversy! Get a Maya Wrap, Give Baby the Breast, and Keep You Sanity!
The "Anti-Breast" movement has gained sooo much ground that women now feel uncomfortable breast-feeding their babies even if nothing is said to them!
So, what is the solution? Obviously, there is no one sure-fire way to deal with staring, pointing, down-right rude comments, and being asked to leave - BUT do not despair - there is no need to effect your child's HEALTH in order to maintain your own sanity when dealing with the public.
How do I survive? I got a Maya Wrap (www.mayawrap.com), which allows me to carry my son everywhere (he can lay down, sit up, look around, be close to mama, and nurse!) and "hide" him while breast-feeding. This works so well! Especially when my son was new-born - people didn't even know he was there, never mind eating.
The Maya Wrap is a single piece of fabric that loops around the body and holds your child close to you - it has a "tail" that you can pull over the baby when nursing, so the child is quite thoroughly hidden from view. The best part is that because he is attached to me, it's a piece of cake for me to WALK away in situations where I feel uncomfortable (or my son is making a lot of sucking/popping sounds - haven't found a solution for that, I'm afraid!)
The freedom to move and the ability to carry around our own bit of privacy has made nursing my son in the "Anti-Breast" environment not only bearable, but enjoyable (never mind eliminating the need to pack bottles and formula everywhere we go).
Still not sure? - talk to a midwife and/or lactation specialist - breast really is best and there is no need to feel uncomfortable or strange when using a Maya Wrap!

Post a CommentI had the Maya adjustable pouch when my daughter was little. No tail, but still, when I was walking around a store or the mall nursing her in it, no one was the wiser. Most people thought she was sleeping. Now she's too long for the cradle hold and we use a mei tai.
