The Mayo Clinic Diet is one of the best diet plans available for anyone who wants to make the most of his or her New Year's resolution. The year 2009 will mark the highest point for the increasing rates of cardiovascular diseases, obesity, and cancer. However, researchers and medical professionals have worked hard to create the Mayo Clinic Diet plan.

It is more than just about proper nutrition. The meaning of health is not just having the absence of disease; it is also the overall well-being of you and the quality of life. Here are the most important pillars of the Mayo Clinic diet plan.

Follow the Food Pyramid and Prioritize the Types of Foods You Eat

Unfortunately, this means cutting out the fat foods such as ice cream, fried chicken burgers, and French fries. The human body requires carbohydrates to supply the most of its energy, which can be found in pastas, cereals, and whole grain foods. Don't forget that processed wheat, which is found in most mainstream cereal, does not contain all its nutritional B-complex vitamins and dietary fiber.

Many people think that cutting carbs is the best way to lose weight but they are completely wrong. Carbohydrates are only converted to fat if you do not exercise. Burn those calories and build up your metabolism and eat proper whole grain food.

The main foods that everyone should eat are fruits and vegetables. It is the most important category of the Mayo Clinic Diet food pyramid. It is an understatement to say that fruits and vegetables contribute to the majority of your health, immune system, nervous system, and even your intelligence.

Superfoods - Fruits , Vegetables, and Lean Meat

Did you know that there are certain foods, termed superfoods , that can actively reduce the risk of cancer? Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the United States and is ever rising. Scientists have not discovered a cure but we have proven that nutritious food rich in anti-oxidants and carcinogen destroying molecules boost your immune system - preventing cancer.

Foods such as oranges, lemons, and raw vegetables like broccoli are not only a great way to lose weight naturally; they can increase your life span significantly. They contain vital for life functioning vitamins that regulate your immune system's ability to destroy potentially cancerous cells. Research also shows that lean meat found in steak and chicken contain high amounts of selenium, a molecule that fights prostate, colon, and gastric cancer.

Vegetarians benefit the most because nuts and oil seeds are rich in anti-oxidants such as campferol. Nuts also provide the majority of the protein needs and can easily replace meat. However, meat is the only food that contains the complete proteins and essential amino acids for your body. Vegetarians must eat a variety of healthy foods to make the most of the Mayo Clinic Diet plan, burn fat, increase their metabolism, and accomplish their New Years resolutions.

Exercise Increases the Quality of Life and Your Self-Confidence

The Mayo Clinic Diet can only work if you exercise frequently throughout the week, for atleast an hour on most days. Physical exercise such as jogging and a simple brisk walk in the neighborhood increase your levels of endorphins, which are chemical molecules equivalent to pain-killers. That's where the phrase "the runner's high" came from.

Exercise raises your metabolism so you can consistently burn calories and shave off the pounds. Your cardiovascular health is also highly improved, which prevents the risk of heart attacks and other terminal illnesses. Lifestyle is the most important variable that determines a person's health and quality of life.

While many men want to gain six-pack abs and powerful biceps through working out, they forget that exercise requires proper nutrition and rest. Carbohydrates are paramount and protein is required to repair the muscle tissues so they can grow stronger each time you go to the gym.

The amount of protein you eat in foods like chicken works very well to build up your muscles and muscle is proven to help speed up the metabolism of fat - which helps you maintain a healthy body weight throughout your life. Carbohydrates also have to be eaten in foods such as bread so your body can resupply the energy lost and keep your muscles working as they rest. If you do not eat the right foods in enough amounts after exercise, your body will burn muscle instead of fat and do more harm to your body instead.

Financial Costs - Set Realistic Goals and Make Commitments

The Mayo clinic diet can only be followed if you truly believe in having a healthy lifestyle. I live thousands of miles from my home in the US because I study abroad in medical school in India. But the reality is that fruits, vegetables, and other foods are not that expensive or hard to find. I eat a bowl of fresh cut fruits every three mornings of each week and in a country like India, it's extra important for my immune system's ability to fight disease.

The best gym in my campus town of Manipal has state of the art equipment - from the year 1970. But instead of being inactive and using my location as an excuse, I run a mile every week around the dirt track near the library. If you do not have the equipment, don't worry. There are many home workouts you can do and exercises you can do outside.

The long-term benefits of the Mayo Clinic diet is the main reason why this goal of all New Years resolutions should not be given up. You can actively reduce your risk of cancer, which causes the deaths of millions of Americans every year. You can lose weight, eat healthy foods, and increase your life-span. The quality of life is most important and preventing diseases can save you more money that you can imagine, as opposed to treating the disease when you get it.

Money is nothing compared to your health so maintain a positive attitude for all your diet goals.
