The Mazzy Star Collection: a Linkology of Mazzy Star Lyrics, Videos, Bios, Fade into You and More

Will Wright
It's hard to put a label on Mazzy Star. Somewhere between dream pop and psychedelic, Mazzy Star emerged into the mid-'90's alternative scene as a band that was truly alternative.

Mazzy Star Background
With origins drawing heavily from the LA's Paisley Underground movement, Mazzy Star was created by David Roback and Hope Sandoval. Roback had started the band, Opal, with Kendra Smith, after leaving the Rain Parade. Smith introduced Roback to Sandoval, and when Smith decided to leave Opal in the middle of a tour, Sandoval became her replacement. Once the tour ended, Opal disbanded. Roback and Sandoval formed Mazzy Star.

Mazzy Star signed with Rough Trade Records, founded by Geoff Travis, and in 1990 released their debut album, She Hangs Brightly. With a blend of haunting guitar and sublime vocal work, She Hangs Brightly set the tone for future Mazzy Star offerings. The album wasn't a big success, but it did establish Mazzy Star as an emergent band with a moody lyrical blend and one-of-a-kind sound.

In 1991, Rough Trade Records closed its North American operations. Mazzy Star's contract was then sold to Capitol Records, who re-released She Hangs Brightly and then released Mazzy Star's follow-up album, So Tonight That I Might See in 1993. So Tonight That I Might See produced Mazzy Star's biggest hit single, Fade Into You, which charted in 1994 at #44 on the US Hot 100.

In 1996, Mazzy Star produced their next album, Among My Swan. Although the album did moderately well, Capitol Records was underwhelmed by its performance as compared to the platinum-selling success of So Tonight That I Might See.

Mazzy Star toured in support of the album until 1997, after which they took a three-year hiatus. In 2000, Mazzy Star performed a European mini-tour and played new songs that were supposedly to be part of their forthcoming album. However, no new album was ever released by Mazzy Star, and Hope Sandoval would subsequently go on to form a new band, Hope Sandoval and the Warm Intentions. Sandoval would also release a solo album, Bavarian Fruit Bread.

There is a misspelling above. The name of Hope's new band is Hope Sandoval and the Warm Inventions (NOT Intentions). But, alas, I too, wish Mazzy Star would put out some new material. While the new group has the vocals and lyrics reminiscent of Mazzy Star, it lacks the guitar work that I found so great to go along with those vocals.

Mazzy Starr was lame. Their only good song was fade into you.
