The McHenry Singers:Of Thee I Sing CD Review

Family and Faith Make for a Great Musical Combination

Lee Hansen
Soulful. Heart-stirring. Passionate. Mellow.

These are just a few terms I would use to describe a recently released Gospel CD entitled, "Of Thee I Sing". It is performed by an African-American family known as the McHenry Singers. They live in Arizona.

What is particularly enjoyable about this musical rendering is that the majority of the selections are classic hymns from days long gone. The group consists of the husband-wife team of Albert and Annette McHenry; their two daughters Janet Parker and Joan Sherwood. Marc Parker is the son-in-law. Mary Frances Wilkinson-Clay is the pianist for the group and family friend.

All the group's members have been involved in music in some fashion for a good portion of their lives. Even though they are part of a group, they continue crafting their skills in individual musical endeavors.

There are a total of 12 songs on the CD. They are as follows: Amazing Grace, It is Well With My Soul, At the Cross, Precious Lord Take My Hand, There's Something About That Name, The Old Rugged Cross, Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen, I Will Choose Christ, Leave It There, Give Me Jesus, Lift Every Voice and Sing and Tribute To America.

The harmony generated by the melodic voices and the remarkable piano-playing are simply inspirational and uplifting. Even as I'm typing this article for publication, my ears are being delightfully entertained as I listen to this CD.

What comes through so well is the clarity and enunciation of the words as they are being sung. The piano playing serves as a refreshing diversion from additional instruments that can sometimes be overpowering and distracting. Purity at its finest.

On the last song Tribute to America, a spirit of patriotism penetrates your soul. It makes you proud to be an American. Mary Frances Wilkinson-Clay adds an exclamation point to her riveting piano performance. It is absolutely excellent.

This Gospel CD was produced by Albert L. McHenry and recorded and mastered at Saltmine Recording Studio Oasis. This recording can be purchased at www.cdbaby.com.

Here you will be given different ordering options. The total cost including S/H was $18.43. It has been well worth the investment.

If you sometimes yearn for those classic Gospel songs from days long past, this is one I would highly recommend without any hesitation.

This is a musical CD that will definitely be a part of my listening library for years to come.

Received this as a gift. Harmonies make old favorites come alive.
You can hear the "family" in it, and they are having fun.
Add this to your "replay" list.
