The fast beat, upbeat, jazzy 1971 song "Band Of Gold" sung by Freda Payne is an oldies but goodie. The song tells the tale of a woman pleading for her new husband to come back and make love to her on their honeymoon. This song has generated a lot of controversary. I took a poll and my friends believe it is about an impotent man who couldn't perform his husbandly duties. Some friends believe that the man realizes he didn't love her after all and left her on her honeymoon night. This all leads to the belief that it is the "The man's fault." That It is a "He did her wrong song." This guess is right when you reread the 5th and 6th line after the second chorus. The line reads; "And the dream of what love can be if you were still here with me." The line speculates that he's left. I was surprised to learn the truth. It is not "He" who is the problem; it is "She" who is the problem. The woman in the song is frigid. She is a virgin who found she was frigid on the night of her honeymoon and couldn't fulfill the consummation of the marriage.
I love this song and had no idea what it was really about. I told my mother what I learned and she told me that it made sense. The feminist book, "The Female Eunuch" by Germaine Greer, (Published in 1970) exposed the fact that most woman of the time found they were frigid. I recently reread the lyrics and found the truth. Go ahead and sing along to it if you already know the song. If you don't click on the link below: (You are in for a treat).
Now that you're gone
All that's left is a band of gold
All that's left of the dream I hold
Is a band of gold
And the memories of what love could be
If you are still here with me
You took me from the shelter of a mother I had never known
Who loved any other
We kissed after taking vows
But that night on our honeymoon
We stayed in separate rooms
I wait in the darkness of my lonely room
Filled with sadness, filled with gloom
Hoping soon that you'll walk
Back through that door
And love me like you tried before
Since you've been gone
All that's left is a band of gold
All that's left of the dream I hold
Is a band of gold
And the dream of what love could be
If you are still here with me
Ooh, don't you know that I wait in the darkness of my lonely room
Filled with sadness, filled with gloom
Hoping soon that you'll walk
Back through that door
And love me like you tried before
Since you've been gone
All that's left is a band of gold
All that's left of the dream I hold
Is a band of gold
And the dream of what love could be
If you are still here with me

Post a CommentYou know, my fave song is Elton John's "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road"- I wonder the meaning behind it now. Great article, we don't often think of the story behind our favorite tunes
Nicely done, Cheers. :)

I recall that song. It is a good one. I never knew that's what the lyrics were. Sometimes the true meaning of lyrics are surprising. My sister loved this song.
