The Meaning Behind My Favorite Song, The River, by Garth Brooks

Leslie Boe
The River, by Garth Brooks, is absolutely beautiful. It's lyrical, melodic, poetic, and profound. It is a favorite of mine. The interpretation I've written below is just that: my interpretation. I hope you will take this chance to view this song in a different light.

Each one of us has a dream, only things happen in life to cause us to alter our dreams. Learning from those situations, we can make adjustments in our lives so that we can stay on track to achieve our dreams.

The chorus presents us with a picture of a bird flying. It is said that we will go through life aimlessly if we don't set goals. In order to reach those goals we may need to take risks. By trying to achieve our goals, we are happy. It's important to be happy, living life to the fullest.

When I hear this verse, I see a person sitting on the shoreline. In life, I see this person standing aside (doing nothing) and watching other people live life. These people let fear and caution prevent them from exploring opportunities presented to them. Settling for the comfortable and the known makes us dull and boring people.

There are going to be difficult times, times of struggle due to chances that you take. Having faith in a higher power as your guide during this time lets you know you will make it through this time in your life.

The song closes with a challenge to us all: Live life to the fullest each day that we are alive.

Interesting. It's been a while since I've heard this Garth Brooks song. But if my memory still works, then I'm thinking you've done a good job on this interpretation!
