The Meaning of Halloween and Other Poems

Chad R. Herman
A fertility ritual turns
into
a
grab as much candy
as you
can
and
we

the
materialistic society
are ok with it -
because
our kids
having no teeth

is better than
them
thinking
about
S-E-X

Halloween accident

We took
my downsyndrome
cousin
trick or treating

for the first
time in his
entire life.

He was
Twenty-Six.

At 2 am
he was gone,
everyone was
asleep.

He was
trick or treating.

The lure
of free candy
was just too
much for him.

We found him
20 minutes later.

With a full pillow case
of candy. Who gave
him candy at
2 am?

Plastic rubber band

I wore the plastic
masks with little slits that
you couldn't see,

and you could feel your
tepid breath
tainted with sweets

come back at you as
you painfully asked
trick or treat.

What did you get,
who knows, but
you felt something fall in.

The only thing that mattered
was the treats
and the pain

being inflicted on you
as the little rubber band
of your superman or barbie

mask, visciously
pulled your
hair.
