Imagine you are walking on the beach, a very large open beach, and you pick up a small handful of sand. You drop the sand, and now in your hand are just a few specks of sand. You try to get all of the sand out of your hand, you smack your hands together, you shake your hands, and now all that remains is just a little bit of sand barely visible to the eye. Now look closely at the palm of your hand. Right there in the center of your palm is one tiny little speck of sand.
That tiny little speck of sand represents one trillion years. Now blow that tiny speck of sand onto the beach. Can you find it again? Now step back and look at the entire beach with the knowledge that every little tiny speck of sand on that beach represents one trillion years. How much time is on that beach?
Our minds can't even begin to comprehend how much time that beach represents, but I will tell you this; all of the time on every beach on this entire planet does not equal one second in eternity.
Eternity is where God exists. It's not a long, drawn out existence, but a perpetual state of being. When we die, we go straight into the presence of God.
The thief on the cross believed that Jesus was Lord.
"And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, Today shalt thou be with me in paradise."
So the meaning of life must be like a baby in the womb. Perhaps it's part of our soul's natural development. Our spiritual growth determines our eternal fate. Evidently, living here on earth in mortal bodies has some kind of significance. Our souls are immortal, yet here we are. Why?
The apostle Paul said, "For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. But if I live in the flesh, this is the fruit of my labor: yet what I shall choose I wot not. For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better: Nevertheless to abide in the flesh is more needful for you." (Phil. 1:22)
As a Christian who worships the Father and His Son Jesus Christ, I too have a strong desire to depart to be with Christ; which I believe is far better. However, while I am in the flesh, I live for Christ Jesus.
We are given a lifetime to prepare and apparently, we are given a choice as to how we're going to spend eternity. Therefore, the meaning of life is the preparation of the soul for eternity.
"For what is your life? It is even a vapor, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away." (James 4:14)
