Playing without Jose Reyes and Angel Pagan, the Mets waited out an hour and a half rain delay at the start of the game and jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning. David Wright drove in two runs with a double and Ike Davis singled home Wright to give the Mets the early lead.
With thier ace Mike Pelfrey on the mound things were looking good for the Mets, but Pelfrey quiickly gave up two runs in the bottom of the inning to make it 3-2 after one.
Jesus Feliciano, starting for the injured Angel Pagan, singled home Alex Cora in the top of the 2nd inning to get one run back for the Mets. It was Feliciano's second hit of the game.
Mike Pelfrey battled all night but was finally knocked out of the game with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning after giving up two more runs to tie the game at four. Elmer Dessens came out of the pen and retired Mike Lamb to end the Marlins threat.
The Mets bounced back in the top of the sixth and retook the lead on a Josh Thole RBI single and look poised to break the game open but Jesus Felicano lined into a double play to end the inning.
The Mets added another run in the top of the seventh on an RBI single from Jason Bay to give the Mets a 6-4 lead.
With two outs in the bottom of the eighth the Marlins inched closer by scoring another run off reliever Bobby Parnell. With two outs Met manager Jerry Manuel brought in closer Francisco Rodriguez who put out the fire in the bottom of the eighth inning and pitched the ninth to save the game for the Mets. K-Rod did give up two hits in the ninth but struck out Brian Barden to end the game.
Elmer Dessens earned his second win of the season and K-Rod recorded his 18th save of the season. With the win the Mets improved to 44 and 34 and remained 1.5 games behind the first place Atlanta Braves.
