The Miami Dolphins Gunslinger Who Never Won a Super Bowl: The Life and Times of Dan Marino

Alfonso Coley
One of the greatest attributes that made Dan Marino one of the Greatest NFL quarterbacks was his volcanic passion for the game of football. Dan Marino will always be remembered as one of the best pure passers in the NFL. He will also be remembered as having one of the strongest arms in the NFL, which also contributed to laser-beam accuracy. But most of all, his desire to win was one of his beat attributes, unfortunately Dan Marino never had all of the weapons he needed to get the one thing he wanted most, a Super Bowl ring as he so civilly displays in this quote. "I have always said that I want to finish my career with the Dolphins and this put me closer to that goal. I have been fortunate to break many personal records, but my overriding goal is to win a Super Bowl here in Miami." This was what he felt during his playing days before his retirement.

As Dan Marino gracefully bowed out of the game, he left nothing to be ashamed of, every pass he threw were a lightning bolt that excited NFL fans - and made mince-meat of opposing defenders. "I know I've got to just keep throwing the ball. That's what I do best." Even though this quote is in past tense terms, this is what set Dan Marino apart from other quarterbacks who lacked lesser arm strength.

Dan Marino is comfortable with the fact that he is one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play the game, which gives him a peace of mind knowing he played the game with all he had. "If you ask any great player or great quarterback, there's a certain inner confidence that you're as good as anybody. But you can't say who the absolute best is. To be considered is special in itself." Dan Marino acknowledges that his family has always been the bedrock of his success and happiness. "My father always taught me to appreciate what you're fortunate to have and give back to those who need it. No part of our society is more important than the children, especially the ones who need our help. My parents would always say, 'It doesn't' matter if it's a guy picking up the garbage or the President of the United States, treat everybody as you would want to be treated."

If there is one poignant quote that Dan Marino has stated would be in reference to that one possession that is the key component on winning a Super Bowl. "Sure, the home-field is an advantage - but so is having a lot of talent." What more can be said, the feeling is mutual for any great player who never got the chance to win the big one. But what may be one of the most important things that fans remember about Dan Marino, was his courage to accept the fact the Super Bowl does not make the man, it is how you give your all, that is what fans will remember and cherish at the end of the day. "You need to feel that the game is important to you. Lose that feeling and you lose your edge. There's no faking that kind of emotion. You can't invent the feeling. It's got to be natural, real."
