The Middle of the Night

M.S.Medina
The silence surrounds me, the darkness complete.
My thoughts whirl around in my head
My thoughts overwhelming
To sleep seems a feat
I wonder why I stay in this bed?

I ponder the things tomorrow to do.
I wish for someone with whom I could talk.
I turn on the light, then turn it off
I get up and head off to the loo.

Time passes so slowly when you just can't sleep.
There seems to be nothing to do.
I lay here awake, my eyes open wide
and wish I could sleep like you do.

The light slowly creeps in.
Darkness begins it's decent.
Light begins to appear all around.
I push tortured thoughts from my brain
I ponder the unfairness of being awake
When there's no one to hear me complain.

My eyes start to grow heavy, the light starts to fade
Could it be finally sleep I have found?

Too bad I don't make as good use out of my insomnia.

That is beautifully done. .... I've had trouble sleeping since I was a kid, and now am at the point where I go whole nights. It's like having a four-day week of really long days. .... I've heard this is called apnia and it is the most unreported "medical malady" of all. .... I don't feel tired the next day, it just bothers me because experts say we are SUPPOSED to sleep all these hours, and I can't. (Unless I drink, which I've learned is not a good solution.)

This rarely happens to me but when it does, it's one of the most annoying things in my life. You feel like you've wasted the hours yet have nothing to show for it, and you have to get up and feel worthless all day on top of it. A very astute observation!

    Oh, can I relate!

Terrific! I truly hate that feeling of finally falling asleep just as the alarm intrudes.
