The Miracle Fruit: Does it Really Exists?

Shellie
Yes, as a matter of fact it does exist. Its scientific name is Synsepalum dulcifium, but is most commonly referred to as the Miracle Fruit or Berry. This particular fruit has a wide range of uses to include but not limited to cancer treatment, medicinal recipes, as well as nutritional needs, just to name a few.

The origin of the Miracle fruit is Southeast Africa and was actually discovered in the early 1700's by an explorer known as Chevalier des Marchais.

One of the most spectacular things the Miracle Berry is known for is the taste changing affects it is capable of. The berry itself is mostly tasteless, but it is the chemical reaction that makes it do what it does.

The berry contains a chemical known as miraculin, which is what actually causes the taste of something sour or bitter to change into something sweet or sugary.

I'm not really going to get into the scientific reasons for the chemical change, just the side effects. Side effects are usually bad; however, in this case, they're fantastic for many different reasons of course.

First I'd like to inform you of how it has been used as a cancer treatment. Cancer patients often have to be subjected to chemotherapy. As we all know, there is an A to Z list of dreadful side effects caused from the chemotherapy. Two of which is loss of appetite and having this "metallic" taste in the patients mouth.

One solution to having a lack of appetite because of loss of taste caused from treatment is adding different seasonings to your foods. The other solution is to try sucking on hard candy like peppermint or even chewing gum. However, these solutions like many others recommended do not always work.

The exceptional properties of miracle fruit have been used for appetite stimulation for persons taking chemotherapy medicines to aid them in eliminating the metallic taste and return the aspiration for food.

It's as simple as eating the berry (careful it has a seed in the middle) with the sweetness affects lasting up to two hours. I will have more information on other remedies and recipes the Miracle Berry can be used for in my next article.
