The Miracle of Hydrastis

T.C. Hana
Hydrastis is a little known miracle that is very effective in treating allergies and sinus problems. Hydrastis doesn't grow everywhere, but the Germans did a great job of putting it into a specially formulated nasal spray to ward off the bacteria that causes cold and flu. Hydrastis is powerful, but typically it is formulated with other things in order to provide the maximum affect and start the healing process. The key with hydrastis is that it doesn't dry out the nasal passages like saline, which is the base of most nasal sprays.

What is Hydrastis?

Hydrastis is also known as "Goldenseal", or "Goldenseal Root". It is now one of the most popular herbs sold in North America, but many don't realize the healing affects it has. The unpredictable weather in the Midwest is what drives such a high rate of allergies, and those with allergy problems and recurrent sinus infections need something to help ease the affects and symptoms that make every day life miserable. Watery eyes, stuffy noses and congestion are all eased by using hydrastis on a regular basis.

What you will find in health food stores and places like the Vitamin Shoppe, are teas and herbs marked "Goldenseal", or "Goldenseal Root". If you aren't sure what you are looking for then ask for help and they can direct you. Usually anyone that works in a health food store is pretty knowledgeable about the products and can help you find what you need. They aren't experts, but the employees usually use the products and have a passion for natural health and can point you in the general direction.

Are There Side Effects of Hydrastis (Goldenseal) ?

Everyone has a unique makeup and blood chemistry, so hydrastis may or may not have side effects. Most hydrastis products do have something in them known as berberine, which could lower your blood sugar unknowingly, so be careful. If you have had problems with hypoglycemia in the past, then you may want to check with your doctor before using this product. When in doubt always be a label reader, and that way it should clearly indicate whether or not there is berberine in it.

Seek immediate medical attention if you have any doubts that what you are experiencing is a result of using hydrastis. Generally, herbal supplements don't have ill side effects, and are considered safe for women who are nursing or pregnant. However, please don't use a product like this if you are 100% certain, and don't use anything you are unfamiliar with until you speak with your doctor first.
