The Misadventures of Johnny Driver, Season 2: Epilogue

John Myers
Continued from here.

For the rest of the summer, Johnny got to relax without any worries or stress. For the first couple of weeks he'd moped around a bit, missing Ben, but it was a good thing he had friends around to keep his mind occupied. He and Kim went to the beach several times, he saw a couple of movies with his mom, and he even got to go to Six Flags with his buddy Rich. By the time the school began in September, both Wellington's and Ben seemed like distant memories. That is, until the second week of September when Johnny got a call from Stewart.

"Hey Johnny, how was the rest of your summer?" Stewart was very pleasant.

"Good, Stewart, really good... I actually loved not having to be anywhere or do anything for a few weeks. I'm feeling much better these days."

"Aw, that's good to hear. Listen Johnny, I was wondering if you'd like to do a wedding with me the second week of October. It's in the city, for Bill, at Aristocratic Affairs' banquet hall."

"What happened to the guy who took my place?" Johnny was curious.

"Oh, George is a busy guy. He works two other jobs and I didn't even bother to ask him. We missed you at the flower shop, even Misty." Stewart knew very well the animosity between Johnny and Misty. "C'mon, what do you say? It'll be just you and me. Misty and Jackie are going to work the shop that day and I'd really like for you to work it with me."

Johnny thought about it and smiled. It felt good to be missed, and Stewart seemed genuine. "Sure, I'll do it." He was glad Stewart had called him. He could certainly use the money and besides, he might just need to work next summer. They agreed for Stewart to pick Johnny up at his house around 7AM and they would drive into the city from there.

The job was easy, for an Aristocratic Affairs wedding anyway. Bill was nowhere to be found the entire day, and he and Stewart got along splendidly. They actually had some fun together. It felt good to work with Stewart again. Working at the flower shop had always been a nice, mindless respite from teaching for Johnny. Even though Johnny had been so exasperated that summer, he was glad to be a part of it again.

At the end of the day, Stewart paid Johnny for his services and he even gave him an extra $40 to get home. (Johnny always took the train back to Long Island since Stewart usually stayed at his apartment in the city after a job there.) They exchanged their goodbyes and Johnny was off to Penn Station, but not before Stewart gave Johnny a couple of more dates to work that fall. Johnny was happy. He hadn't burned any bridges after all!
